With the Plex usage ramping up, the concept of multiple movie versions is becoming more of a concern. There are 1080p, 4K, UHD, and all of the different resolutions. There 3D versus 2D versions. There are also extended editions, director’s cuts, etc. Separating these versions out into different libraries does not work since Plex treats them as a single entity on the Home page. If I watch the 4K version of Thor: Ragnarok and stop it half way, I have 2 versions of it listed on my home page to “continue watching.” I don’t even know which one is which unless I go into the info screen for each one and see which Library it belongs to…not an ideal solution. I know there is the option for Multiple Versions of a movie in the same library and that works partially. Unfortunately, the version selection is based on resolution, so the “ArbitraryText” that is added to the file name is useless.
My suggestion is to use the ArbitraryText as the label in the version selection. This would allow us to label our multiple versions of movies however we want. That is the kind of freedom we enjoy in Plex and that ability would be easy to accomplish. I would love the ability to label my movies for 4K vs 1080p. Or Regular vs Extended edition or 3D vs 2D. And I could accomplish it all by just having them all in the same library with the same name…and the arbitrary text would just be used to label them within the same item. That would be a major help to properly organize these pieces.
