Multiple versions

There needs to be added proper support for multiple versions of a movie.

For example, I have ripped two versions of I Am Legend, where the only difference is that they have different endings. Plex does not see the difference and gives me no option to choose one.

For now I've split them into two movies as a workaround, but that's still a workaround and it would be more ideal to get a menu where I choose "Original" or "Alternate".

I assume you know that plex can stack 'multiple media versions' of movies and that you're actually complaining about how it presents them to you?

I complained about the way plex presents them here.

The solution here would be to have another container for the movie. Much how TV shows are. Select a movie and then inside it has the editions listed as "episodes" so to speak.

Right now the media stacking feature is for different resolutions and for multi-part files not for multi-edition movies.

Granted, the multiple editions of Movies are considered separate movies by the metadata scraper. If you have a 3D, Release DVD and then the Director's Cut Blu Ray, then you should have 3 seperate movies listed as the IMDB scraper sees them as 3 different & unrelated movies. There is no simple way of identifying what is related to who without resorting to a regex search as IMDB isn't going to list this information.

I'd be more than happy for plex to simply read the tag line i specify in my filename and offer me a choice in a text popup window.

Metadata isn't always available for multiple versions IME.

Yes. As I said, by splitting them into two entries I can get a way of selecting. But the way listed on the wiki does not work. At least not with my PMS. Two files with different tags at the end of the filename, but with same resolution and container, it doesn't give me a choice to select between them if they are in the same entry.

And the wiki even says "For now, this is a Mac PMS feature only." - unless I read that wrong, it means my Windows PMS doesn't support it?

It might be client limited. What client are you using?

It works fine on Windows but i've only tested with plex/web and PHT.

I have tried using Plex/Web and PHT. Neither lets me choose version.

Media stacking only works if the 2 files are either sequential videos ( CD1, CD2 ...) or if they are different resolutions. Neither is your case so it's likely not to work at all.

To clear things up. 'Stacking' is the term plex uses for multi-part media (CD1/CD2).

'Multi Media Versions' is the term for 2 different versions of the same file (i.e. extended versions). They do not need to be of differing resolutions although one might need to manually merge these files within plex. Providing they display the little 'badge' showing the 2 (or more) files then a selection list should be presented on screen to choose which version the user wants to play.

Odd, I do have that badge (a little blue/gray box that says '2'), but I do not have an option to select file. Does this mean there is some bug and I should actually have been able to select between them? :S

EDIT: I looked in the Plex/Web settings and disabled the "Always use the highest resolution" option. Then I get a choice. Maybe the text of that should be updated to indicate it doesn't allow you to select if there are multiple files with the highest resolution. I still have no choice in PHT, though.

Just to make sure, did you click play and you were not offered to choose at that point?

I got the choice in Plex/Web after disabling an option in the Player part of the settings. In PHT I only get the choice between if I wanna continue or start from the beginning.

In PHT, mark it as watched/unwatched and then try again. It may be trying to resume from a previous selection.

I did try that just now, I still didn't get a choice.

I don't use PHT, but im sure there is a setting in there somewhere for it.

When i said i get the option in PHT, i might have lied a little bit.

I'm not getting the option to choose either.

Not always as easy as it sounds, particularly when search terms differ. But thanks for the link.

As for PHT not allowing selection...http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/67792-selecting-multiple-versions-of-same-media-eg-720p-vs-sd/?hl=%2Bcuts+%2Bmovie

Since MKV natively supports multiple versions (called editions or ordered chapters) of a movie, it would be great if Plex would offer me the choice of which version to watch. Also, this has been a part of LAV Splitter for a long time now. Therefore it is also time to support segment linking as well.

Sadly, nothing regarding this problem has happened yet. I’d wish for a statement from a Plex dev.
