Music album sorting oddities

If this is the wrong place for this question please let me know. I looked at the other categories and nothing seemed to quite fit.

I’m looking at my Plex music library using the browser on a Windows 10 PC. The Plex Media Server is running on a Synology NAS. As you can see from the picture below I’m looking at albums sorted by Album Artist. So what the heck are Bad Company, 10,000 Maniacs, and Willy Porter doing smack in the middle of the L’s? I’ve looked at the structure on the file system and all the metadata and I can’t figure out what’s going on. Willing to try (almost) any suggestion.

Can you right click on one of the files and look at the detail properties, just to verify there isn’t something funny added into a line you may not be seeing? I use MusicBrainz Picard to verify my music files.

Set the sorting drop-down back and forth, just in case this is some sort of refresh failure.

Do also inspect the Artist and see what is set as ‘Sort Artist’ .

We have a winner! The “Sort Artist” field contained “LBUMARTISTSORT” for those artists.

I’m in the process of moving my music library from iTunes to Plex. We’re a Windows/Android household so having the music in iTunes doesn’t make it easy to access places other than my iPod. I’m having a bit of mixed success with it, plus having to learn different places where the information is stored.

Thanks for the help.

You can configure Musicbrainz Picard to not store these evil “album artist sort” tags into your files. [HowTo] Music Organizing with MusicBrainz Picard

Thanks. I’ve been using MP3Tag to manage my tags in combination with iTunes. Once I figure out all the quirks of using Plex to manage and organize my music I’ll take a look at Musicbrainz Picard more closely.
