Music Feature Poll

Hello,

I like your idea for playback by artist, genre etc. and have modified the poll to reflect this. Playlists are already in the pole and fairly popular (51%).

Importing iTunes tags would likely be associated with the Robust ID3 Management option in the poll; although, admittedly, I can't read the developer's minds.

Thanks everybody for your input and don't forget to LIKE this post to keep it popular and in front of the developers.

Audio book Recognition
Totally understand this re-posted in this forum

Sorry For not making myself clearer the first time around, if i'm still not clear don't hesitate to point it out.

Yes. Support for Audiobooks - more precisely a resume feature - would be awesome. Maybe even a separate section.

Hi folks, I'll add a posting to my votes: YES, please address music section on Plex.

I Love Plex, it's the (translated from a German saying) "egg laying wool milk sow" (== jack of all trades). But the music section is really barely usable. It takes ages to find my music on the iOS devices (even new ones), and not being able to make playlists and perform some serious cleanups really closes the chapter :( Also, I'd love smart playlists (big missing topic in the poll) like those i used in iTunes. And while you're at it: Great flags such as "last played", "last skipped", "number of plays" greatly help with smart playlists, once they'd be there.

For movies and tv shows it is already nerdvana, please do the same for music. I'll keep my Plex Pass for the time being, hope it supports development!

Keep it UP!

Greetings,

Lorenzo

Better Music management please!?!??!?!   I would love to use Plex for ALL of my media and the fact that it is so good with everything else makes it that much more disappointing that simple things like "Play All" by artist or "Playlists" aren't supported.  This from a paying Plex Pass member!!  :)

Oh ya, thanks for everything else.  I love Plex.  :)

Added my vote.

As I find myself more and more using Plex as my primary distributed media player, having these basis music features/options would really be welcome.

For me the playlist support is the most important, but also bringing back of two features from old Plex:

1.) queuing of music (stopped working in PHT). Pressing space to edit queue, pressing "Q" to enqueue something, reordering songs from the queue. It was really useful

2.) jumping by typing SHIFT-"first up to three letters" would jump to that artist (starting with these letters) immediately. Now when I press shift-FEV it jumps to artists starting with F, then to artists starting with E, ... I would like to jump to artist that starts with "FEV", which makes it really fast to choose in a large library. Thanks!

Yes, I noticed that as well.

i would like a dedicated music player for the desktop

Really surprised that adding an album to a collection isn't supported yet - it would be a very useful feature. :)

A simple "play a random album" function would be nice. I currently do this in XBMC with a smart playlist:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>

    Random Albums
    all
    random

I agree -- feature really would be great.

Music Features for IOS App

1.  App will retain queue when app closed or when switching between apps on the phone.

2. Ability to Chromecast synced content.   My synced content is what I'm listening to the most and I would like to Chromecast it.   Maybe put some code to pull same album from the server. Music just never starts playing.  Anything on the server plays fine.

3. Currently the shuffle does not work for synced content.  Gives a " Couldn't Create Play Queue" error

4. When casting to Chromecast the queue button is no longer there.   No way of viewing the queue.

I think lyric support would be useful, especially since several web repositories exist (e.g., http://api.wikia.com/wiki/LyricWiki_API). Then a visualization might be possible that somehow pairs the album art with the (scrolling?) lyrics. If this functionality already exists either natively or via a plugin, I apologize for my ignorance. Has anyone killed this one yet?

If not, I may make this an exercise for myself to finally learn Python ...

How about a resume feature when listening to albums where you want to continue listing to long pieces i.e. classical compositions or soundtracks.

I note that the OP wrote: "I think its handling of music albums could use some improvement".  That's the understatement of the year! I am appalled at how crude the Plex App for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone are. Only being able to browse my Music collection by Artist? That is terrible.

This is nothing compared to Windows Media Center, which, since 2004 (ten years ago!), has offered a choice of being able to browse Music by Album, Artist (both per track and per Album), Genre, Song, Playlist, Composer, and Year.

It seems clear that the Plex developers want to add bells and whistles only to Movies and TV. Listening to music (or browsing/viewing photo libraries) seems not something they give much priority to.

Resume for audio libraries would be really useful for albums, podcasts and audiobooks

Here we are in 2016 and things are about the same as they were in 2015, 2014, and 2013 for Plex audio users. Audio bookmarks are sorely needed. The ability to sync playlists is still nowhere to be found. Audio support needs a lot of attention but with just a little attention the Plex team could make some major improvements and put a smile on a lot of users faces. Even with its shortcomings in audio, that’s all I use plex for, I still love Plex. I don’t even bother looking for other solution because the product is just so good and has so much potential.

I’m all for a better music solution in Plex that can finally replace iTunes and Spotify…

I’ve liked the post, on the grounds that more attention to music would be appreciated. I do want to chime in on ID3 tagging though - I really don’t want plex writing back to my media - any of it.

I see plex as a playback engine and I don’t want it screwing up carefully amending my tags with its own ones. Writing back data is harder than it sounds - you have to gracefully handle permissions (you may have a read only / locked down media share), the possibility of some other user trying to read the file while you’re writing back to it, the possibility of running out of temporary disk space while you’re munching the new tag data about, the possibility of multiple web clients all trying to write different updates to the same file… not easy, and I’d rather they spend the time on other things.

I’ve given up on Plex for handling my music collection; I use Roon instead.
