Music Feature Poll

Yah, Plex is horrible with music. A music player simply isn’t a music player if can’t even do gapless playback.

I use Roon as well.

Various artists should be handled as discussed here :

Yes…at the album level, I want ONE entry for (example) Van Morrison’s Duets: Reworking the Catalogue album which has 16 tracks (basically consolidated on Van Morrison the album artist), instead of 16 separate entries because each track is Van Morrison duetting with another artist. Plex treats this as 16 separate entries. For me, the album artist (Van Morrison) or the album artist Various (for a compilation) should take precedence (or at least allow me to select this as how I want my albums displayed).

My New Years wish is that you could set your music library to prefer the originaldate tag over the date tag, so my albums could be easily sorted chronologically irrespective of the date of the reissue of the version I have.

Regarding tag editing/management:

I don’t think it’s prudent for PLEX to add ID3 tag editing features because it’s not a tag editing program. Let’s let the folks at PLEX focus on being the best media library/player it can be. It’s not likely that they could incorporate tag editing features that would rival the power and flexibility of MP3Tag or one of the other widely available tag editors.

On a related note, I’ve never encountered an issue with the way in which PLEX displays albums/tracks that couldn’t be resolved by editing the embedded ID3 tags and allowing PLEX to read/use those embedded ID3 tags. Studio albums, compilation albums, career spanning collections; it makes no difference. You can get them to display the way you want by editing the embedded ID3 tags.

Finally, I don’t recommend using PLEX’s existing album tagging features because those tags are proprietary. They only exist in PLEX and don’t move with the files, should you decide to use them outside of the PLEX ecosystem. All of your diligent/hard tagging work will be for not. Therefore, my preference is to always edit the embedded ID3 tags to my liking using software solely and specifically designed to do just that.

Has the collections at album level been implemented?

I can’t figure out how to do that.

I want to do something like “Top 10 albums of 2016”

I would love to be able to import existing M3U playlists (other formats too).

Perhaps a playlist directory to accompany music libraries?

Use case:
I manage my music ratings, tags, and smart playlists in MusicBee. I export those smart playlists to static m3u playlists.
I’d like to have those playlists available in Plex for those times when MusicBee isn’t available to me.
I currently do this on Subsonic, but I would rather have this native in Plex.

My current music top feature requests:

Album cover from ID3 tags first!!: All my music is properly tag/with cover, instead plex give me ugly blurry covers
Rating from/to ID3 tag, there could be an option to do it using the file, or have each user have it’s own rating, personally I want rating to be synced to/from id3 so my rating remain consistant.
Support** better playlist** creation, rating, and smart playlist.

That’s it.

across the board, id3 tags aren’t done well with Plex. Ratings ignored.

It also should do m3u playlist direct import. This is really trivial code…

I strongly agree that id3 tags need a bit of love. Given their ubiquity in other apps, I can’t imagine it is too difficult.

Like others, I’ve added lots of information to the id3 tags in other software. I’d like to be able to preserve this information recorded in id3 fields that are currently not scanned. Rating and comments would be incredibly helpful. Much of the data has been pulled from Discogs.

Without this information, Plex often feels overly simplistic and disappointing.

Unfortunately, for music I’m shifting to Emby now since they support the import of m3u playlists. Hopefully Plex gets this at some point in the future.
