What do other people use for music file management? I get that Plex can’t/won’t do it within the app. I’ve been using iTunes for years, can I just point the Plex library towards the existing iTunes library without worrying about either app messing things up? I’d like to use Plex for the daily use, and only switch to a file manager for adding new music or editing incorrect information when I find it.
What do you mean with “music file management”?
Plex works different from iTunes as in Plex won’t change your files’ names based on titles, track # etc. – instead Plex will lookup metadata based on file name and folder structure (unless you configure it to recognize embedded metadata).
Except for compilations and music videos, linking Plex to an existing iTunes music folder should work. However there’s no need to actually have your music in iTunes… you can dump your files right into your Plex library/folder (assuming they’re properly named) and afterwards playback at your pleasure. Currently I’m only using iTunes to occasionally purchase some music…

I’m using musicbrainz picard. It’s extremely helpful and you can write your own naming scripts and things like that to customize the naming to your own liking too. It is able to move and sort and rename, as well as tagging the files with the correct metadata for plex to use.
I have personally moved and tagged almost 200k tracks in it, with the help of some plugins (to make batching easier) and it works very well in plex.
Another vote for music brains here - plex loves the tracks it gets from it
