What can I do to get my music recognized by Plex?

Hello,

Plex does a fantastic job of matching up most of my movies. It doesn’t seem to do very well with my music so I figure I should probably rename them.

Here is an example of a file in my file explorer

Here is what happens when I put it in plex without any modifications.

It selects that same album and picture for about 1000 of my songs - (it must be one heck of an album  ).

try running the music through this before adding to Plex.

Thanks - I’ve used picard - it has a habbit of destroying flac files so I’ll back them up first. Can you please give the fine name format that is likely to increase their recognition by plex - e.g. Arlo Guthrie - Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.flac or Alice’s Restaurant Massacree - Arlo Guthrie.flac or (Arlo Guthrie) Alice’s Restaurant Massacree.flac

This is the file details - I modify the genre for my collection but the rest remains the same.

Since it is not getting the album title or the artist from the details, I’m not sure what picard is going to do to improve it.

Here you go

you need to be looking at the metadata not the file properties in Windows.

Even something like Tigo Tago or ID3 Tag Editor is a better way to go about this.

But PleX is best used with musicbrainz.

OK - I’ve think I’ve shown the metadata - what metadata is it missing or where is it stored other than the details?

Here is the ID Tag if it matters

i don’t see anything particularly wrong with it, maybe someone else will.

i personally compare tags from something that works if i’m in doubt. also you said this doesn’t appear at all?

maybe check the unmatched filter in plex as well.

Thanks! where is the unmatched filter?

on web, you can also filter on album, etc.

Thanks everyone. I did end up using picard and while it did manage to get about 50% of them right, it left the remainder unknown despite they have the singers and song title in the name. I’m not putting it down, just letting others know what to expect if they have the same question and come accross it.

Also make sure to make a back up of your flac files (I fortunately did that). It doesn’t seem to damage MP3’s when putting in metadata, I’d guess about 5% of my flac files are no longer playable.

If all your tracks contains the album title as embedded meta tag, you should be able to put them into a proper folder structure by a half-automatic process.

You should explore the “Tags → Filename” feature of mp3tag

as for backups, i tend to make a copy of any music i’m playing with - work with it then make another copy into the plex library, so i end up with three copies, but music files are small so i’m not that worried.
