I’ve used MusicBrainz to tag my music files and have added them into Plex. Many of my files were put into the Various Artists folder. I’ve been manually going through each file to correct the Album Artist name to the correct Artist so that it can be grouped and sorted correctly. However when I edit the file and save, then try to re-sort, the file stays in it’s same spot (from the VA location). I’ve reopened a few changed files in a tag editor and the new correct Album Artist is there, so I’m not sure why Plex isn’t now sorting it to the correct alphabetical location.
To follow this up, in Track view, when I click on the letter V to the right, it still goes to where the Various Artists tracks started, even though I’ve changed their Album Artist info.
Have you Refreshed Metadata in Plex after editing the files?
Yes I have and it does not fix the issue - there are no longer any reference to Various Artists in my Music Library but the Album Artist column still sorts it like it is.
For one of these albums that isn’t sorting correctly, have you edited the album in Plex to see if there’s anything in the “Sort Album” field?
Deleting all Sort fields in the ID3 tags may help. Also, deleting all Musicbrainz fields may help too. I’ve found it’s always better to get ID3 tags the way I want them first before playing around with the Plex fields.
I’ve also discovered that when changing a Plex field that it doesn’t always “take”. I have to add a space to the end of the string then immediately delete the space in order for Plex to know that a change has been made. It’s quirky but it works.
I have found the issue but have not yet been able to fix it. In the group of music where the “Various Artists” titles were, even though I have changed the Album Artist and Artist fields (no longer VA) it’s still sorting them alphabetically by the Album title in this section as it did when they were VA. I’ve tried to delete the Album title and re-add it but for some reason it’s still sorting these by Album title even though there’s no filter/sorting fields activated for this.
All right, I think it’s time for screenshots. I’m not visualizing what you’re seeing. Can you provide a screenshot of your tag editor showing at least the following tags: Filename, Album Title, Track Title, Album Artist, Track Artist, Disc Number, Track Number.
It would be helpful also to see the full path to where these files are, and the path that your Plex Music library is pointing to.
