So I have my music organized the best I can with every song being in an artist folder and then in the album folder if possible. Many songs plex was able to see and sort. However I have many that got lumped into a “Various Artist” album folder. Now even though I know the album of the song and go to change it by hitting the “edit” button. It will revert back to “Various Artist” and won’t change. I’ve tried changing up the folders, renaming the file, adding as much info as possible, but it won’t change. Any thoughts?
I would start with this Help page and make sure your directory structure and filenames are consistent with Plex’s guidelines.
Is the file tagged correctly, or are you relying on folder structure?
When thats happen to me, I check the specific songs landed in “Various Artist” with my Tag Editor. When everything is correct I drag the specific files to another directory and delete them in Plex. (Note if you dont drag them to another folder plex will delete your files!) After that I put them back and rescan my libary.
Whenever your libary gets broken or you want to drag your libary to another Plex server you have to do everything again when you edit wrong files in Plex only. Thats why its worth it to use a Tag Editor instead.
Edit: In my Tag Editor (MP3 Tag) sometimes its necessary to set an “Album Artist” when there are different “Artists” for one song.
This seems to be happening to me too. I ripped four popular albums recently and they all went to the various artists tag and they are not. I am not able to force them into their own category for some reason, almost like the various artists tag is read only. Another thing that I noticed is that the “match” option doesn’t appear to be working all that well. One album I was able to choose the correct match and it still came back as a various artist. I recently changed computers, but it is just weird that it won’t let me change the artist tag manually like I’ve done many times before.
Also something to note is that three out of the four albums all had the first track (“Track 1” not the song name) messed up belonging to “Unkonwn Artist” spelled incorrectly. I had to go into the folder view and fix each of these tracks.
You probably have to edit the tags first outside of Plex before importing: in your tag editor of choice, leave Album Artist empty, set correct Artist for each song, tick “part of compilation”.
Plex has some limitations with V/A compilations though:
- songs on V/A comps are not listed under the Artist view
- Plex ignores the “Part Of Compilation” (TCMP) tag, so it can’t group V/A compilations in a separate category like for example iTunes does.
- Plex does not filter by Year correctly if there are songs from different years on an Album
That’s exactly what I had to do. In the properties of the files it had it under Various Artist. Once I deleted that I was able to make changes. Plex found maybe half and fixed them automatically. But the other half I had to go in and sort. This time I was able to make changes at least.
