My server at home (little HTPC) is getting a bit iffy so I want to replace it with something simple.
I am thinking of the WD My Passport Wireless Pro 3tb. I have a very fast fiber connection with a brilliant router so I would be using direct play for all the media.
Might be a stupid question but, if this was plugged into the mains all the time and connected to my internet could I use it as a central home server and stream it to me when I’m away i.e leave it at home connected to the internet and stream to tablet/phone through wifi/cell?
Not really what it is designed for.
It cannot trans-code at all so if your device you want to stream to can’t handle the format it wouldn’t work.
I have had some luck just using Plex’s optimization and moving those to the drive, but I use my full Plex server to do that.
It might work but not sure if that is really the best solution for a full replacement.
If all my content is h.264 and either mp4 or avi or mkv and all 1080p. And my broadband is fast enough for direct play would this device be able to direct stream? Looking on the site it seems recoding from avi/mkv is a straightforward and requires very little processing power. Can it do that?
Sorry for the multiple replies but, all I want it to do is directly play from the server to my house and occasionally outside the house, but it stay at home (almost every time). It would be direct play/stream to my LG tv plex app, android device, ios device and plex media player. Looking on the support pages all these apps support h.264 MP4 1080p.
Any ideas? If not this one which NAS would be able to do this with the plex server installed on it. I only have 1tb of media.
