Anyone use WD MyPassport Pro Wireless or similar as their sever? How well does it work? How many people can stream simultaneously and is the general file size?
It “might” work but it is a VERY bad idea to have either the Plex server or the storage connected to your network wirelessly. While wireless can be god the fact is that for servers, except for the most basic kind, or for storage needing smooth access wireless just has too many failure points.
Many clients like the Roku or the Fire TV or many others have limited internal buffers and need stable streams to work well.
The above is particularly true if you run any client wireless. Putting one wireless device in the media delivery chain is unpredictable in many cases but putting two in the chain is just asking for streaming problems.
Actually I wouldn’t use it with my home network at all. I have a regular server for that. I wanted it for the portability. This particular external HD (I assume other companies make something similar) is battery operated. So I could load it up with content to play on mobile devices and have it for long trips. As I understand it it doesn’t transcode so I would have to do that for all the devices it will play on. At least that’s the info I’ve read. Just wondering if anyone has any real world experiences with it.
