I’m trying to find a NAS that works wirelessly in my network since i dont have acess to wireless network right now. And of course powerfull enough to encode at least full HD. 4K is not important, but could be nice for the future. Please help. Any suggestions?
NAS and WiFi? Worst idea ever, sorry mate.
Im using a computer with the plex server running only through wifi and it works perfectly fine. Why is that a problem on a NAS?
Because serving files on a WiFi connection is not recommended since WiFi is not seen as reliable connection. You will have trouble finding a NAS with WiFi I suppose, and the reason for this is what I stated.
Thats entirely up to what router you have. I see that Synology had NAS that was compatible with usb-wifi but has now stopped.
Ok, but even if you had to use wifi, you don’t need wifi built into the NAS though?
Use a NAS with its ethernet port, and connect something like a TP-Link AC750 running in client mode that takes your WIFI, but provides a wired connection…
Additionally, you should have a router where you can hard wire your NAS to.
If your home is wired with coax you may want to consider MoCA as a backhaul to carry Ethernet to your server (whatever it ends up being). As an alternative to Wi-Fi it offers generally higher, more consistent speeds and next to no additional latency. I’ve used it for a few years to carry Ethernet from the back of my house (where my router lives) to the switch at the front of my house. The speeds are great and there’s none of the variability you can experience with Wi-Fi.
If you’re set on Wi-Fi, both QNAP and Synology supply lists of dongles which connected to provide it for their NAS devices. Just use your favorite web search tool to find “synology/qnap nas wifi” and it find what you need. But, for the reasons above, I’d still recommend looking for a better solution.
Thanks for the sugestions. Right now i dont have the oppurtunity to wire anything. The landlord has the router and im using everything with wifi. In the future when i have my own place i will ofc connect it to the router directly. Its just having an option for the time beeing. The nas would also need to have ethernet port but wanted to see if anyone has found some with wifi built inn. Using a something like the TP-Link AC750 is not the worst idea. Thanks!
Then my next question. I am going to be using my Android mostly to download and then transfer the files to the NAS/plex media folder. Any good sugestions for the best interface for Android App?
