Hello everyone, my library has become too large to keep adding hard drives to my PC. I was curious if anyone has any advice on what to go with for an external solution. I am considering this “Mediasonic USB 3.1 Type C 8 Bay 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure – USB 3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps support UASP / S.M.A.R.T (H82-SU31C) - Newegg.com-9SIA61H8X08053--Product&quicklink=true”. I have a total of 8 (10Tb) drives currently and foresee more in the future. For now the 8-bay enclosure for $400 seems most viable. I am also building a second PC to run plex only but I have that handled already and really only need advice on the external solution. I usually have anywhere from 2-5 users logged in at one time or another and my PC (old and new) far exceed any requirements necessary for hardware acceleration and everything else. Thanks for any advice in advance!
The enclosure looks nice. USB 3.1 10Gb/sec should do the trick. I noticed there are no reviews yet so you’ll be beta testing it.
I found some reviews of the same device on Amazon, only a couple are bad, and th remainder good and there’s even a Plex user comment and he even modified the device and added fans in the front. Unless anyone has a better choice I will go with this one and I will let everyone here know how it goes. Thanks for the reply!
Just to let all the Plexers know, I installed the new enclosure into the new PC and everything works better than I had imagined! My users now have 24/7 access to my server uninterrupted! I highly recommend this solution for the users with massive libraries like mine, and I will definitely be getting a second one, when the time comes! If anyone has more questions feel free to ask. I did have to install a riser card in the new pc to get USB 3.1-Type-C ports in my new pc, but once I connected everything after swapping my drives into it, my media was instantly recognized and drive letters populated immediately. I also followed Plex’ instructions for moving a server from one PC to another, and that also went off without a hitch!
