Hi,
I am trying to use Plex to be a dvr with android friendly files that do not need to be transcoded.
After plex remuxed the hdhomerun file to mp4 container I ran it through a script I found to get the mpeg2 and ac3 codec copied to h264 and aac. but it still needed to be transoded … ugh… what needs to be changed?
I have an mp4 file with the following details -
Video details per PLEX

Here is my log file -
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByrtBHddN3ZIeDhWNmxwb2N1U3M The file I pulled on my android s5 was at 22:10-ish
**If someone can tell me what codec/bitrate/values need to be changed that would be great.
Also if someone can tell me what exactly in this log I am looking for and how do I get a cleaner log that does NOT show all the debug information in it? **
What words, etc, do I need to search on in the log to key in on why it is transcoding?
thanks for your help

The logfile you provided only covers 30 minutes from ~ 22:30 to 23:00 hrs
You need to look out for lines containing the string MDE: this is the ‘media decision engine’ which will tell you why the transcoding took place.
The Android app has a preference where you can set the maximum “H.264 Level”. Usually this is pre-set with the maximum number your hardware supports. Some older devices only support a lower Level than 4.0 (which your file uses).
Other common reasons why transcoding takes place are
- activation of subtitles
- a bitrate restriction set in the Android app
- a bitrate restriction set in the server (with the latest Plex Pass version for ‘remote’ connections)

I will check for MDE thanks for that tip.
Based on my file details is the resolution to high, bit rate ok? see anything else?
Can my S5 phone play 1080 video?
Are there any known ffmpeg settings for andriod/chomebook that folks use?
thanks haeffnkr

There is a bitrate-limit preference in the client app. At which bitrate is it set, currently?
Can my S5 phone play 1080 video?
I don’t know, I don’t have that device.

‘Android’ is a whole class of devices with vastly different abilities and hardware.
There are no ‘universal’ encoding parameters therefore.
You could aim low and use the lowest common denominator. But this may lead to lower picture quality/combined with excess bitrate, due to lower encoding efficiency.
I strongly suggest you look at the log file and find out the reason for the transcoding.
Then you adapt your media accordingly.
You must also differentiate between Direct Stream and Transcoding.
Direct Stream is not so bad. It has a relatively low ‘CPU penalty’.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250387-Streaming-Media-Direct-Play-and-Direct-Stream

I set the video to original size and just tried it again… pegged the cpu.

Please disable ‘verbose’ logging. It adds nothing but noise.
And then attach the whole log. I can’t tell anything from this snippet. It doesn’t even contain the interesting MDE: lines.

You still have ‘verbose’ logging enabled, and the lines with MDE: are not among those posted.
The log file snippet you posted only covers less than 1 second.

at 20:44 I pulled up the file that works and watched for less than a minute.
at 20:46 I tried to pull up the file 2 time and the 3 it worked and the cpu is pegged and exited.
I appreciate your help

              Would you please go to
Settings - Server - General - (Show Advanced) - and disable the checkbox labeled ‘Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging’
afterwards, restart Plex Server.
Once again, the log file you posted is still ‘verbose’ and thus contains none of the interesting lines from when the playback started and the decision was made to transcode.
There is no need to use google drive for log files. .jpg, .log and .zip files can be attached directly to posts in this forum

              Hello,
I have none of the options checked -
Enable Plex Media Server debug logging
Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging
Allow Plex Media Server tokens in logs
I stopped and started plex.
I watched the 2 files
bone collector
buckmaster
Same bone collector again
Now the cpu was not maxed out during the bone collector movie like it had been? very confused now.
Version 1.2.0.2838 3rd beta for DVR
What do you see in the log?

I watched another file that was in mpeg2 format… cpu pegged. Nothing in the log that I can see why it transcoded, I dont see MDE…?
Is there a bug or change in the log output in the dvr beta application?
thanks haeffnkr

It’s no mystery that mpeg2 needs a full blown video transcode. That very thing is what has made MCEBuddy so popular for the last… uhhhh… decade…
If you’re using an HDHomerun device it would behoove you to find out how to switch it over from mpeg2 to h264 video streams - or learn a lot more about recoding video streams while investigating the purchase of a great big new CPU capable of crushing an encode or transcode of unsupported video formats.

You absolutely need to check the first option: “debug” logging. Without it, no useful information will show up in the logs.
The other two indeed should be disabled.
