Need help with transcoding on a potato

Hope this doesn’t waste anyone’s valuable time.

I’m using a vintage 2011 laptop as my PMS with these specs:

-i7-2630QM Sandy Bridge
-Nvidia GeForce GT540M
-8GB DDR3 RAM

My CPU chokes on transcoding 10-bit HEVC content with Plex (for my Fire TV Stick Gen2), and wondering if there’s a good guide for minimizing the impact of transcoding on lower-end devices.

I’ve chosen “Prefer higher speed encoding”, default throttle buffer of “60”, and background x264 preset is on “Ultra Fast”.

Are there more settings beyond hardware acceleration I can tweak with a Plex Pass? I’ve tried hardware acceleration with Emby, and if it’s the same HVENC process, it only works with 600+ series Nvidia cards.

Perhaps I can cut the throttle buffer in half to “30”, which may require half the throughput? I’m grasping at straws really.

I will say anecdotally, Plex uses 100% of my CPU during transcoding and chokes, whereas Emby stabilizes at 95% CPU usage, and doesn’t choke while transcoding 10-bit x265 even at 10Mbps datastream.

I’ve read conflicing reports on here that some find Plex performs better at CPU transcoding, while others Emby. Perhaps I’m in the latter category?

Your vintage laptop predates 4K tv and therefore lacks the means by which to be successful with. Your choices are to disallow 4k media, disallow non 4k clients or buy new server and clients.

@pl_5309 thanks for the input. I’m referring to 1080p streams, as I have no interest in 4K at this time.
