New client streaming box for 4K

Server Version#:
Player Version#: UHD Google TV

Guys, I’m trying to resolve a simple task of playing back 4K music videos from my NAS drive using Plex and are running into numerous problems!

Ist off my Panasonic Smart TV won’t decode OPUS sound or play MKV videos so started to convert these into MP4 files with AAC sound this sort of worked but now I’m faced with lip sync errors!

So ithough I would go out and purchase a streaming box so after searching for what has good review I ordered a ROCKTEC GX1 this looked very promesing got BBC iPlayer to work in UHD, Youtube in 4K then I trying plex and this is when it all feel apart!

1st off, my Plex server was transcoding all my 4K videos down to 1080P FFS!

after a bit of tweating got it to sort of work in direct play, but every now and then it would transode a 4K video to 4K ? Why? As seen on the attached screenshot, I think what it was trying to do here was change the frame rate from say 60 to 24, or change 30 to 24 in doing so it was causing motion judder or frame skipping on moving scenes?

How can I make it play them directly without any conversion process? This is doing my head in!

Some of my videos do indeed have different frame rates, but on an old Five TV box, they all play perfectly smoothly at 60Hz. for some reason on Auto this box seems to want to play them at 24Hz? why

Can you guys recomend a streaming box to use? I thought about an Invidia Shield, and the Apple 4K box doesn’t do UHD on BBC iplayer? I’m running out of options here!

My Nvidia Shield Pro direct plays everything I throw at it.

Shield → Denon → LG TV

Thanks, yes, I had thought of getting an Invidis shield, but they’re a bit old now and isn’t a new model just around the corner? I know Apple TV are finally bringing out a new 2026 Apple TV, but their old model doesn’t support BBC iPlayer in UHD?

I did read online after I purchased this Rockteck GX1 that people have reported firmware issues with the AFC so I’m not the only one to experience these issuses and it’s really annoying as otherwise it’s a good, capable box, but I can’t live with this frame dropping!

If you have a Raspberry Pi and can put LibreElec on it that will handle most everything.

I’ve the 2015 Nvidia Pro. It is still going strong and still receiving software updates. If it died today I’d happily buy a new one.

There has been zero news from Nvidia regarding a new model. Just a lot of wishful thinking from people wanting an updated model.

The Amazon FireStick 4K Max Gen 2 is also an option. It is basically a cut down version of the Shield. It runs the same Plex Android TV app. It direct plays the same video / audio / subtitle formats. It does have the Amazon UI, which heavily pushes their streaming services, but once you’re in the Plex app it looks the same as the Shield. One other difference is with DTS passthrough. The FireStick passes only the DTS lossy core audio. So, if you play DTS-HD or DTS:X it direct plays, but you only get the lossy 5.1.

Another option is the Ugoos AM6B+. You will have to load the CoreElec OS, then Kodi, then the Plex for Kodi add-on. The advantage of the AM6B+ is that it correctly handles Dolby Vision profile 7 (in addition to 5 & 8). IIRC, the Shield and FireStick play DVp7 as HDR10 video.

Hi I’ve just ordered an Nvidia Shield. Pro I see Amazon got some back in stock?

I see these come with a Plex Server already pre-installed? Can I just use it as a client, as I already have my Plex server running on my Ugreen NAS? Do I need to remove the pre-installed server program and then install the client APP instead? Is this what I need to do in this case? Thanks

Yes.

No.

Don’t overthink it.

Update the Nvidia system software. Launch the Google Play store and update all the apps. You’re good.
