Hello Everyone,
A newbie here,I recently acquired a WD My Cloud Home (MCH) and decided to dive into the world of playing 4K movies through Plex on my Nvidia Shield TV Device (2017) via my MCH (NAS). The problem is the my 4K Movies are stuttering in Original Quality as ocassionally in “Convert Automatically” as well despite me using a Direct Play.
My NAS is hardwired to my router and so is my Shield TV. My internet connection is 30 Mbps (we don’t have 100 mbps connections like they do in the US). My entire experience has been ruined as i had high hopes of having a stutter free experience.I was also kind of mislead leading to believe that the NAS is the ultimate way of watching high quality 4K content. I wish i would have invested in a standard high volume USB Drive instead.
Just to let you guys know that my Equipment list as follows:
Nvidia Shield TV (2017) Plex Version 7.31.0.16802.
Samsing NU 8000 4K UHD TV 65 inches.
Yamaha RX V-685 7.1, Dolby Atmos enabled AV Receiver.
WD My Cloud Home NAS Storage 8TB.
D-Link DIR- 816L Router hardwired to my Shield TV and NAS Storage. My router claims a wireless speed of 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. But in wired i checked it is 100 Mbps.
I would be extremely grateful of any of you out there can help me with my problem. Also pardon me i didn’t know in which section to post my query.
Thank you for your response. Let me get back to you with a couple of gigabit switches I’ll shortlist and hopefully can find them. I will share those model numbers with you and then you can guide me which one to buy.
Judging from my equipment list do you think rest of the equipment is fairly adequate?
I would just look for the cheapest, but name brand, 8 port gigabit switch. They are all pretty much the same, unless you wanted to get a more expensive ‘smart’ switch (which are unnecessary for basic home use).
if you are playing locally from your nas, then your internet connection speed has nothing to do with watching videos from your nas.
If you are watching from someone elses’s server on the internet, then your internet speed would be relevant, even then 30m down is generally plenty for most things non-4k.
I don’t know the performance of your nas, but again, as long as you are direct playing just about any nas will suffice.
Now that you have identified the bottleneck (your router/network), what until that is fixed before trying to fix anything else.
Hi TeknoJunky,
Just acquired a gigbit desktop switch TP LINK TL-SG100D and connected it to my router, and strangely my 4K movies are stuttering as they used to before. My Shield TV, NAS, PC and router all are connected to my 8-port gigabit switch. Help needed.
EDIT: The cable i was using was a CAT5, switched to a 5e and stuttering is a hit and a miss, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Any clues.
play a video.
watch tautulli and see if it is transcoding
if it is transcoding, that is probably why you get stuttering
figure out why its transcoding to prevent stuttering
if both video/audio are direct playing (not transcoding)
then it will likely still be a network issue, or your server is not fast enough to keep up with the data rate of the movies in question
if you can reliably reproduce the problem, ie it always happens in the same spot, there are some known issues with the shield on certain videos which nvidia is still working on.
in any case,
along with the above, reproduce the problem, download logs from server, and from client.
Okay from what I have gathered that I play a video on my Shield TV and then I switch back to my PC (where Tautulli is installed) and keep monitoring whether it is transcoding or not?(Since I am using an ATMOS AV Receiver and I will have to switch back and forth with my inputs as all devices are tied to my AVR). But as soon as I switch to my PC the movie being played on Shield TV stops. Which means I would have to do it on a separate laptop or something.
As for my server being not fast enough would be a real bummer. I had just made a substantial investment on attaining the WD My Cloud Home I was also told as long as your are not transcoding, any device of the type is good to go even the most basic ones.
Some observations are from testing mentioned below:
Occasionally it will get stuck in a particular spot , but that will vary with each run of the file.
I have also noticed something very strange. A video has a more chance of stuttering if I select “Play Original Quality” in PLAYBACK SETTINGS of the player. If I leave it on “Convert Automatically” and it’s still doing 4K, “X” MBPs it has less chance of stuttering but it will eventually stutter. I have also noticed that after an extended period of time say after 1 hour and 1.5 hours stutters are more prone to happen.
As for the logs I check them and update you accordingly.
EDIT: I have downloaded the log zip file. How can I share it with you? Can you kindly share your email address with me?
you should always have it set to original quality, otherwise it could be transcoding.
if you do not have an atmos receiver, that is likely the problem, you need a receiver that can decode the TRUEHD/atmos of a 4k remux.
otherwise, you need to choose a different audio stream (ie dolby digital/dts, 5.1 or stereo).
as already explained in great detail in the FAQ linked far above, the HD audio and subtitles are the most common reasons for transcoding.
shield alone is not a full solution, although you may be able to configure the shield to decode the audio instead of ‘pass through’, either way you will lose the hd audio (truehd/atmos).
as far as watching tautulli, you obviously need to have a separate monitor for your pc or a laptop or something that is not going through the receiver.
I have a Dolby Atmos enabled receiver it is a Yamaha 7.1/ Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 AV Receiver.
I always set it to Original Quality but it stutters more in my opinion, although with further testing it is stuttering either way.
