I have been getting a bunch of notifications on, for instance, my Android phones that have the Plex app installed, that look like this:
New Device
[my username] used a new device to access [my servername]: Chrome (Chrome)
I am not consciously using Chrome to access Plex anywhere. But I wouldn’t be surprised if this was something else identifying itself as Chrome, or some kind of extension or plugin checking in automatically.
How can I get more information about this access? Like an IP address would help.
I found some “Plex Media Server” log files, and the only access I see in there that isn’t coming from the server itself or my home IP is all coming from plex.bz domains. I assume that’s some Plex webserver something?
Is the password controlling access to my username on my server the same as my plex.tv account password?
The purpose of these alerts is pretty murky. They don’t take you anywhere or really tell you anything. Something happened! Be concerned! Or not! Maybe!
They are there to inform you that a device has been signed into your Plex user account.
So you should know about that this happened.
If you are not aware that you did this, then it could be someone else who did. And that means it may be time to change your account password and maybe activate 2FA.
A more harmless explanation is this:
Your web browser is throwing away all cookies when you close it.
This also means it is logging out of your Plex account and throwing away all client-specific Plex settings.
Next time you open the Plex web app, you have to login again – thus triggering another of those notifications.
You may want to avoid that by instructing your web browser to NOT throw away all cookies from plex.tv
The business about the cookies is the kind of thing I was expecting. If there was a way to see more information about this new sign in - like the IP it came from - I would have a better idea if it was me or someone else. I really almost never sign in to the web app.
