Thinking about building a new Plex server. How does this look?
CPU: Intel Core i7-12700KF https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FXKHN7M/
Motherboard: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3ZNL5XS/
64GB RAM
I’m going to keep the storage on the NAS, along with the *ARR applications, so this box will only be serving Plex.
Will I need a video card at all? I think the CPU should be able to handle everything, including a random 4K transcode???
Thoughts?
F processors have no video so a video card would be needed at least initially to load the system.
The motherboard has Realtek ethernet, try to find one with Intel.
Get a CPU with integrated graphics adapter. These are the ones with Quicksync capability, which is what Plex is using for hardware transcoding.
I think this CPU meets all requirements
Intel Core i5-13600K
Passmark 38,000
Quicksync, integrated UHD graphics 770
Better?
As long as it fits onto your mainboard.
I am not sure if you need a mainboard that actually has a monitor plug. Maybe @ChuckPa has an idea about this.
And it’s worth saying that a Gen 12-13 may be much more power than needed. It depends on the kinds of media you play, if you burn in subtitles, if you need audio transcodes…
More power is always nice but if budget is a factor older CPUs with Quick Sync can still do a great job.
These are fitting within my budget. Yeah, it’s always nice to have a little extra headroom.
Here’s a motherboard that I am looking at

Intel NIC, DDR4 RAM, I think it should pair up nicely, but it’s always great to get second opinions!
Very much appreciate the help here ![]()
Remember, you’re building a server not a workstation
Think this is the right LGA ?
Is H670 better than B660?
B660 chipset is a notch down from the H670 chipset

Apologies –
I missed the i5 question.
Whenever considering different processsors,
- Look at the chip LGA count & layout
- Look at what the Chipset on the motherboard supports
- Look at memory support.
So far, this looks like an easy change from i7 → i5.
Be advised, when converting audio & subtitles, you might just wish you had that i7
(Burning subtitles takes a fair chunk of CPU)
Be certain to consider all playback devices you intend to use
