The i3 will have plenty of horse power to suit your needs (unless you have TONS of people running remotely). Iāve been running plex on the 2012 2.3 quad core 24x7 since I purchased it (new). This new one is actually a little beefier. donāt get hung up on the i3, i5, i7 thing. For $800 this (finally) looks like a mini worth an investment.
edit- the i7 sure is tempting though

What did you go for in the end? Im looking to replace my ageing 2008 iMac which has been on its last legs for the last few months.
Iām on hold upgrading my Mac mini since Iāve had other unexpected costs lately, but I did pick what I would go with if my server ever dies.
If I were to buy right now I would go with the i5, and upgrade the ram to 16GB. There were some deals over the holidays that I missed, but hopefully another will pop up by the time I need to buy. I figure this would last me quick a bit, and then I would open up my Plex to some family members without problem (just got Gigibit Internet, so that shouldnāt be a problem).
