New Pi 2 Owner Questions

So I plan to be coming from using some pretty typical streamers for Plex (FireTV, Apple TV, Roku 2 etc etc) and am looking for something that is strictly Plex (no other apps booted) and also supports as little transcoding for my server as possible.

I was originally going to ask what people do for purchasing a Pi2 (kit, build piece by piece etc etc) but found this and unless someone disagrees or recommends a kit seems fine:

Raspberry Pi 2: http://amzn.com/B00DG9D6IK

Case: www.amazon.com/dp/B00QMPKVUQ/  (clear case works best for the internal IR option)

SD card: http://amzn.com/B0085EG6OW

Remote & IR: http://amzn.com/B00GGX4XVW  (any MCE remote works well, but this is a nice small one)

Pi license keys, if needed for your media: http://www.raspberry...m/license-keys/

Better internal IR receiver: http://www.rasptools...spberry-pi.html

Heatsinks: http://amzn.com/B00RKJG2HY

Questions I had though:

1. Heatsinks... is this needed or no? (I am not worried about $5 but if its not needed then why bother)

2. Is it easy to setup the Harmony remotes with this? Also, what is the response time like (For example the Harmony Remote used with the FireTV is so slow its not worth it)

3. I have a DTS enabled receiver, 5.1 speaker system and a 1080p TV. My content is either 720 or 1080, nothing crazy, I am hoping for the least amount of transcoding possible as the FireTV is horrendous at that. Although my unRAID server can handle 2-3 transcodes I would prefer not too.

Just get:

Raspberry Pi 2
Clear case
2a minimum power supply, micro USB
Sandisk extreme Class 10 SD card, 4gb max
Licence codes from Raspberry Pi Foundation

If your TV supports CEC you don't need an IR receiver, if it doesn't get one one these from MSL Digital http://www.msldigital.com/collections/all-products/products/remotepi-board-plus-2015

Connect Pi to receiver via HDMI, receiver to TV via HDMI.

Rasplex direct plays just about everything with DD and DTS passthrough, more support for AAC5.1 and DTS HD passthrough in next release.

Edit: Forgot to mention, direct Ethernet connection is the best option, powerline adapters second best, do not recommended WiFi.

That first post looks awfully familiar.  :)

Yeah, think it might be worth doing a 'sticky' for the top of the forum!

thanks, definitely plan on ethernet, wifi is too suspect for media for me at this point.

By licenses I assume you mean the two found here (VC-1 & MPEG-2)? http://www.raspberrypi.com/

I posted it to prove I pretended to atleast do SOME research before asking a stupid question :D

Yes.

No problem.

I love my RPi2 setup, but I think some of those links are no longer active on Amazon.  But still, tis a great setup.

I will say that this Wifi works well.  http://amzn.com/B00H95C0A2

Hello everyone,

I have a few quesitons I hope you all don't mind answering. A bit of a background:

I do have fireTV, Apple TV and Roku, however none of these provide elegant ability to stream content (such as home movies that I have created in mp4 format).  Yes I've been converting them to AppleTV format and they show up on under Home Movies category but that is a extra step that is not necessary and addtional space wasted.  I have been playing with XBMC and an old Apple TV with OpenELEC and XBMC (an older version since I believe it is no longer supported on the Apple TV 1). I have a VMWare host and a VMWAre guest dedicated to housing my media and apple content and it streams to any of my Apple TV's from this server. I also installed a UPnP Service on this same VMWare guest and it does stream to my XBMC client on the Apple TV 1 but there are limitations with fast forward, rewind, and playing where I left off. I figured this might be of the version of the O/S or XBMC. I have purchased a Raspberry Pi 2 kit (on its way as I type).

What I like about the current setup about my XBMC and UPnP Set is:

1. The  UPnP Server is pretty small and very well behaved.

2. The media is not loaded on any servers outside my home, nor does it leave my home.

3. The UPnP Sever servers multiple XBMC clients at the same time w/o a issue.

Now to my questions:

1. If I get RasPlex, Can i use my current UPnP Server?

2. Does #2 above still apply? I thought I read some where where media is streamed to Plex servers first? (I do not intend to watch content outside of my home).

3. Is there a better Media server to use with Plex if #2 is true and is that just a Plex Media server?

Thanks for your consideration.

If you don't want to watch content outside of your home and only are interested in good performance/quality on local MP4 files, I'd buy a WD Live or Dune.  You don't really need the whole Plex architecture.  I'm not a fan of UPnP.

RasPlex won't talk to anything but Plex Media Server (PMS), so no UPnP won't work for RasPlex, but PMS does include a UPnP server for other clients...

Plex doesn't keep any of your data, you keep it on your server, you can choose to make it available to yourself or others via streaming from your server or configure it not to.

PMS is pretty decent as a media server :)

I got this for my RPi2 to go with my AC Router. The wife won't let me run cables through the house. It works great
