Planning on buiding a computer just for plex since my gaming gpu cant be taken advantage of past 2 transcodes at one time. What CPU should I get ? (Money is not an issue, just want the best of the best cpu for this purpose)
Depends on your client and if you need transcoding… If you don’t you can get lowest grade CPU and not worry about it.
I’d buy an iMac Pro if I had the money or wait for the new Mac Pro,
only if I could prove it ran Plex before dropping the $15k on it.
It’d be like driving an Aston.
Rules of thumb:
An Intel cpu, because they have QuickSync
(the newer the model of the cpu – the better, because newer QuickSync revisions support more codecs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Hardware_decoding_and_encoding )
If you then have to pick among several models of cpu’s with comparable overall performance, go for the one with the highest ‘Single Thread Rating’.
Even if it means having less cpu cores than the other models.

Buying such a machine solely for running Plex server would result in an incredibly bad ROI.
