New Plex Movie Agent wiping out changes

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3616
Player Version#:

Hello,

Hoping someone can help. I changed over to the new Plex Agent for my Movie library. It failed to match loads of films, matched crazily incorrectly and wiped out all of my existing Collections.

I may not have checked out and followed the best practice for naming conventions, fine, that might be on me. However, the old agent was just fine but I thought the guide said existing Collections would not be touched?

Anyway, spent hours matching, fixing matches and putting everything back in to the custom collections- as far as I know, when changing a tag to put something in a collection, it automatically locks it? The button changes to orange anyway.

A week or so has gone by and its all gone again… films are un-matched, incorrectly matched and my collections (custom) are empty. I put it all back, few days later, all gone again.

Tempted just to go back to the legacy agent but I liked the new artwork.

Have I done something stupid or is this a major bug?
Can someone advise before I waste a lot of time again, please.

Thank you.

Did you read https://support.plex.tv/articles/upgrading-a-movie-library-to-the-use-the-new-plex-movie-agent/ ?

Is your media storage internal or on an external drive?

I’d start by disabling
Settings - Server - Library - “Empty trash automatically after every scan”

Thank you.

I have have read that, yes. That’s what makes me believe my collections should not have been touched. Is there anything in there I have missed that would mean that movies revert back to un-matched, incorrectly matched and have their tags wiped clean?

I can try disabling that- I never let Plex delete files, so would there even be anything in the trash?

Cheers

Edit- sorry forgot to add, library is on iSCSI, so “local” as far as the sever is aware.

This is not about deleting the media files. It prevents Plex from removing the items from its library (and therefore all their metadata, including collections) in the case that your media storage becomes temporarily unavailable (network issue, power outage etc.). Depending on how you mounted this drive and which folder is added to your library, Plex may simply assume that a folder has been deleted intentionally.

Right ok, just read the description again and yeah- “becomes unavailable” as well as deleting stuff. Ok you may be on to something there then- iscsi is always connected but there could have been a drop out during the night.

I disabled it previously when you said, so I will re-do everything and hopefully it wont happen again. It would explain why the problem seemed to be intermittent as well.

So was Plex basically seeing the movies as new files?

Thanks again.

Precisely. It removed everything from the library when the media storage went away and then rescanned everything when it came back.
You should be able to see the ‘Added at’ date when you sort your library by “Date added”.

Yep, everything got added 7 hours ago lol
Dammit, if I had of known about that button before :frowning:
Well, hopefully this is the last time I have to re-do it all.

Thanks very much for the quick help.

You could have been probably avoided that situation, even without disabling the checkbox.
Can you tell me where the mount point is for the iSCSI drive and where your Plex libraries are pointed at?

Sure, iscsi volume is mounted at P: and libraries are P:\video and P:\series if that’s what you mean?

And is the “drive” P: still available in the system when the iSCSI drive craps out?

If so, then you might want to go back to traditional SMB file shares. Plex can detect when a file share (or a regular drive, for that matter) is not available and then doesn’t remove anything from the library.

Erm, I didn’t actually see it happen, but most likely P would still be accessible but unavailable. Depends if iSCSI has just given out or the service tried to mount but was unable to. Most likely the former.

So, its better for the drive to not mount at all, than be mounted but unavailable?

I will look in to changing how I do things. Not sure I can just turn my data in to a share and it is about 20TB.

Thanks for all your help.
