New Plex Server

Hey everyone

I’ve been a happy Plex user for a couple of years now and we recently upgraded our server from a half broken MacBook to a Synology DS916+ 8GB (with about 12TB of media files). When using Direct Stream, or 1 Full HD transcode tops that works okay xD

However, since I’m thinking of getting one of those sweet 4K OLED screens, it’d be cool to watch 4K content on Plex. I already got some 4K movies, but when testing on a friends 4K tv I found out the Synology doesn’t handle it well (which was to be expected).

Another thing: I’m moving out in about 6 months and our current upload speed is 40 Mbps (and we literally cannot get anything higher atm, we won’t get fibre until 2020) so I will need to get another Plex server (for my place, the Synology will be more than enough for my parents xD). Otherwise I’ll just drain their upload speed which I think is not that kind :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve thought about Plex Cloud, but it seems that the maximum storage solution is 1TB at the moment, which is not even close to what I need (12TB at least).

So, the main question: what server to buy!?
I want it to transcode at least 1 4K stream (lot of the files are HEVC…), or 3-4 Full HD streams. I literally have no idea on where to start. I read somewhere that I should aim for a 10.0000 passmark…?
Storage it not an issue, I’ve got an old NAS (WD EX4) laying around with 4 4TB drives in it, so that’s plenty for now. I could also just use the hard drives for the new server.

I don’t mind spending > €1000 if that’s what it takes to get one that I can rely on for several years.
I came across the Acer Aspire TC-780 Core i7. Maybe that could be an option, it exceeds the 10.000 passmark  (it is a desktop model though)

Btw: we use a great variety of clients. (browsers, Apple TV, Playstation, Xbox, smart tv platforms, iOS, Android, PlexPi, etc…)

Any other solution is more than welcome as well
Many thanks in advance!

Firstly IMO I think 4K is overrated.
But then again I thought VHS was pretty good in the 80’s.

I cheap option is the Nvidia Shield (must be the pro) which should handle your media.
If that fails you have a dam good player and then you buy an i7 NUC Skull.

Both those total should come under your budget!!
