The new Plexamp (4.50.x) seems to trigger an UAC prompt when updating or installing on Windows. The old version of Plexamp didn’t need this. That makes using Plexamp on my work PC a lot more hassle than previously. Can Plexamp return to not needing UAC for installing/updating?
Installing software should always trigger an UAC prompt.
Apps which avoid this are actually installing in a folder that is
- only accessible to the currently logged-in user account
- that folder is potentially accessible to other apps
I know that a there are quite a few apps out there which do this – even high-profile ones. But it doesn’t change the fact that this practice is not a good one, from a security perspective.
I can only imagine it being a hassle when you are trying to run it on a machine which is not administered by you, and you therefore don’t have administrator access.

This is not a helpful response. It’s perfectly fine for applications like a music app not needing system access to install. I’d argue that Plexamp needing to elevate to install is worse than just needing user level access, as it did previously. At least let me choose.
I’m lucky in that I can actually elevate my account, as I am an administrator at my worplace, but it’s annoying having to temporary give my user admin access and then manually typing in my credentials to install/update Plexamp. Even the normal Plex app doesn’t need this beyond the first install fwiw.
I can only imagine that you are thinking of the Plex web app, which is not installed at all. Other Plex apps like Plex HTPC, or Plex for Windows do request the admin password when updated/installed on a regular user account.
False. Plex for Windows updates itself on closing if a newer version is detected.
