New smart TV - Plex live antenna TV buffering/converting, unwatchable

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639-fb6452ebf
Player Version#: plex for samsung, version 5.75.1, platform version 6.5

I recently purchased a new, “better” TV and now my live OTA antenna viewing on Plex is unwatchable. This only seems to affect LIVE antenna tv – not recorded shows, movies, music, etc. Only live antenna.

The stream is transcoding, I can see that on the dashboard, and it’s buffering so badly that it’s not watchable. I made sure the server and client are set to enable direct stream and direct play, and to play local video at the original/max quality.

I eventually tried setting up another plex server on a gaming laptop, to test whether my mini-pc server has somehow become too underpowered. No success – the much stronger gaming laptop experiences the same problem with buffering the live antenna stream.

I’ve noticed that on both servers (the mini pc, and the gaming laptop), the CPU use is at 100% while I’m trying to watch live tv and it’s transcoding and buffering.

I tried to work around the situation by using a chromecast 4k dongle, but the chromecast also seems to have trouble with the live tv stream (that’s not new, i’ve never been able to watch plex live tv on that chromecast).

The new TV is Samsung with Tizen OS.
The antenna tuner is HD homerun.

The stream is working fine on the OLD tv – I can see “direct stream” in the plex dashboard, and it’s not buffering on that tv.

What’s the issue here — how do I stop the stream from transcoding? It seems like a new Samsung smart tv should not have a problem accepting the stream format and shouldn’t need to transcode (?)
