(Not sure if this should rather be a Scanner or a media type...)
For a lot of types of media of which there is no public meta-data this would be a good way of presenting and organizing it. It is also very intuitive (KISS and all that).
First: I don't really like the way the Home Movies category with Personal Media Scanner works for MY use case. I realize this might work super well for others, but I got a BIG heap of media ripped from old mini-DVs. No meta-data in the files, all ripped at about the same time. Dumping that in a folder and asking Plex to serve it all up is not working well without editing all the media. I originally organized all the files by year (in sub-folders), but that don't matter to Plex. The obious solution is to edit all the metadata in Plex and give desciptive file-names.
Second: I have downloaded some content off of Channel 9 and MS Virtual Academy (Microsoft training etc). Dumping that in folders like
MS Training (this is a Section)
- Virtual Academy
--- Some topic 1
------ video 1
------ video n
--- Some topic 2
------ video 1
------ video n
- Channel 9
--- Some topic 1
------ video 1
------ video n
--- Some topic 2
------ video 1
------ video n
This gives the standard big list. No embedded meta-data, no public meta-data = manually tagging and organizing.
BUT WAIT! The meta data is already there, in the folder structure!
So what I would want is a category that simply lets you browse a folder structure of whatever media you have. NOT displaying all media, then filtering it by collection, genre, etc
I know this is going against the current design of all the other categories, but it would fit these types of use cases perfectly and you are quite free to not use this type of media-type if you don't like it.
I imagine I'm not the only one with heaps and heaps of home videos or some other type of videos organized by folder.
Ah, ok, it is yet to make it into the web client, and the ATV client is not written by Plex so I am not sure exactly how they display content. As far as "official" Plex goes (and assuming I am understanding your right) this functionality already exist on the server side (and most client side), and once it makes it into the webclient you should be a happy man. Re the ATV, your best bet would be to track down it's current develop (thomashw) and request the feature (and i believe he is tracking this stuff through lighthouse, instructions for which being at the top of the ATV2 client forum)
