New XBMC release out

Some new OS X features
New version of XBMC is out and they have finally caught up with some of the mac specific features of Plex:
http://xbmc.org/team-xbmc/2009/12/24/xbmc-9-11-camelot/

OS X Specific:
Logitech Harmony Universal Remote support
Added support for CoreAudio API and removed the PortAudio API code
AC3 and DTS digital audio pass-through to SP/DIF on Apple TV (thanks to CoreAudio)
Support for running external Applescripts
Support for command-tab application switching
support for OS X Spaces (virtual desktops)

Looks like they are going with a new default skin as well: Confluence (which looks great!)

Will Plex pick up some of the code base changes from XBMC or is it all separate these days?

It crashed on me after a complete fresh install on two machines trying to scrape some series. Plex just seems to

be a lot more stable. Besides that the new theme is looking nice.

I think I saw a post by Jam advising most feature requests going forward (Plex 9) will need to be written from the ground up.

I only just finished setting up XBMC on my old PC for my dad over Christmas. I started setting it up for him a few months ago. Since then new versions of XBMC and Ubuntu have been released.

After a good bit of tinkering I realised how lucky I am to use OS X + Plex. :P

I finally got it to work, but it's fiddly compared to Plex. The new skin is nice, but MediaStream, Aeon and others are better IMO.

On my next visit to the folks I'll setup iPlayer, 4oD etc plugins. No doubt by that time there'll be further new XBMC and Ubuntu versions!! Thank god Plex updates in-app. You don't notice how welcome these little features are until they're gone.

All the media flagging seems to work out of the box though which was nice (but something that I personally have little interest in).

AC3 passthrough is a pretty big deal. I would sure like to see the devs port (or reproduce) that bit!

Maybe it comes for free with the switch to QuickTime X though. Does anyone know?

Plex already has AC3 and DTS passthrough (see for full details: http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Advanced_Audio). Has had since I started using it which was a while ago now.

Yeah, I added digital passthrough a year ago. We even have an AC3 encoder to convert multichannel PCM/AAC to AC3 on the fly.

Quicktime X doesn't do passthrough currently, but we're working on some cool stuff to help with that...

Sorry if this has been asked 100 times... but last I heard we were to expect a big update by years end....now that its Jan any update on the timing of a new version? Of course I would rather have a stable release later than an unstable release sooner so I appreciate all the time being taken in producing quality updates to plex.

We're still beavering away...

plex already has all of this and has for some time, except for the appletv obviously, and i dont really know about spaces, in fact several of these are things xbmc pulled from us.

oh, and Ryan doesnt get nearly enough credit for that ac3 encoder awesomeness, i have buttloads of aac stuff, and several flac 5.1 bluray rips.

Wow. This plus the broadcom decoder card means in a few months an AppleTV will rock as a media center.
