Newbie moving from Win10 to Zorin - plex media access - pointers plzz

Hi there, At the moment it seems a bit daunting.

I have all my media on 4 buffalo NAS, and one internal SSD.

I have sorted accessing the nas using smb1 (yes they are that old).

Zorin can access all files and playback is fine with VLC.

Having started going thru the ‘tips for linux’ pages here, on accessing media from smb locations, [creating a plex user on each nas - creating a plex.cred text file in /etc/ - and I get stuck at the point of mkdir containing the folder structure of the nas folders]

BUT I am wondering if these ‘extra steps’ are really necessary IF zorin can see the files already?.

I can set all the folders to be a ‘Local Network share’ from inside zorin, or create a bookmark for that location, is this not a solution?

Lastly (for the moment) I have added a few mp3 in the home/music/ folder and plex sees the files inside and scans them, (I see the icon circling and the filenames it is checking) but plex does not show them in the music library in plex homepage. I’m sure that the permissions for all the media folders is read/write.

So, some answers please and some pointers as to whether I am going in the correct direction.

Plex is a non-privileged user on Linux.
As admin, you must work with that.

There is a collection of Linux Tips (how-to’s) to help you.

oki doke then… cheers CD

Now I see!

Being a windows user from day one, I was almost intimidated out of doing it, being required to type stuff so accurately and repetitively, but I get it now.

My biggest prob was trying to forget the way windows works.

I hope the trip repays in the expected performance and security gain.

You will spend MORE time on the keyboard typing than you EVER thought possible  lol lol lol

Be advised, We’ve no idea how “ubuntu”-like Zorin is. (untested)
There were other “Ubuntu derivatives” which failed miserably.

If things go so badly sideways for you, Ubuntu desktop is not a bad thing - PLUS – there are multiple desktop managers & themes / skins you can apply

So far I am happy with Zorin, getting network access to windows shares seems to be the hardest part for me.

The rest of the functions seem fine to me, the OS is easy to use now that things have been configured. The included apps are what I need and no ‘bloat’, the windows apps that I ‘must have’ are working fine through ‘wine’.

I am fine with how Zorin is now, no need for an update, especially since I have old equipment alround.

Oh-Oh having set up plex how I like it, I find that it is unwilling to playback any x265 HVEC files locally.

VLC and the built-in video player is fine..

This is on the same hardware as was working fine in windows, so there is some encoding/decoding setting that I am missing. I have Nvidia GTX1050ti which is recognised by plex.

hardware-transcoding is enabled on AUTO and also when available enabled.

HDR tone mapping is disabled.

And I’ve set the simultaneous transcodes to “1”.

Hi there

in the system resources display there is a process name “rygel” that is constantly taking 25% of the cpu.

Is that related to plex in any way?

Oki doke, “rygel” is related to file indexing along with a tracker-miner and one other service/process.

As such it is part of the system and should only be running when files have been change/moved/deleted etc.

When I click an x265 file to play, the message “server is not powerful enough” appears immediately, which is untrue since in Win10 it will playback fine. In fact this PC will play a 4K file locally and at the same time, also play the exact same file through the webtv.app to a remote player. I’ve never had any problems with the windows version.

So there is something else stopping playback of x265 files… time for more Mr.Google

Update - re-installed the package from the ‘Snap Store’ and thankfully the playback is now attempting to play the 4K 265 mkv file. But it taking 80% CPU (not sure where to check for GPU usage as yet), and keeps on buffering every 10 seconds or so.

But at least it is trying to play and no message about “server is not powerful enough”.

I will move to a new tread specifically about the 265 decoding issue on Zorin.
