Hello everyone, I have been using Plex for a while, but I never paid much attention, but now I am planning on getting a NAS with plex and I would like to check to learn a few things in order to make my choice
Most of my content is 1080p, some 4K, but I expect to have more 4K as we move forward, with that in mind I will be playing my movies on an Nvidia Shield most of the time, and the occasional Sony Android TV.
If I play any 4K mkv without subtitled, locally on my own network, I’d assume it will always be direct to play, so no transcoding is happening?
Using subtitles will always force transcoding? Or is there a way around it ? It workes fine on 1080p content, but I’d assume a nas will not be powerful enough to transcode 4K just for subtitles.
I do not plan to stream outside of the home, the content will always be viewed in the home devices I mentioned on top.
Only if the audio format is compatible with your TV.
No. If the TV can direct play the video and the audio, it will probably also direct play subtitles in the SRT format.
The Shield can also direct play PGS and VOBSUB under the above circumstances.
Thanks a lot Otto! That clears a big question I had, my main source of 4K viewing will be the nvidia shield pro connected to a receiver, so I’ll have the receiver do all the audio processing!
For the other devices, I can either work around it or not use subtitles!
