Newbie question ATMOS

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on Plex so hopefully not doing too much wrong.

I have an Apple tv 4k, and xbox one x, a Samsung QE75Q9FN and a Samsung HW-N950 soundbar.

I bought the soundbar to play Atmos blu rays but also a lot of atmos movies from my hard drive on the tv in Atmos.

Somehow there seem to be a lot of issues between xbox one x and the HW-N950 for Atmos (doesn’t recognize the bar as atmos).

So next option would be to use Apple tv 4k with Infuse or preferably Plex to play atmos (connecting the apple tv directly to the soundbar). Apple works when I play netflix in atmos but Infuse and Plex doesn’t seem to send it out in Atmos. I read somewhere Apple is blocking this.

My question is: is this correvt for Plex on Apple tv that Apple doesn;t allow Atmos to be send out? I’m planning to buy a Qnap NAS with HDMI 2.0 port anyways with Plex on it in the future however it would be great to know if Plex does send out Atmos (most movies are True HD 7.1) on Apple tv at this moment to solve this problem at least for now.

If not what would be your recommendation? Shield seems not to be that great with Plex I read but not sure if that’s true. Also Neflix on Shield doesn’t support Atmos.

The AppleTV 4K does not support TrueHD, which means no support for TrueHD + Atmos, which is the Atmos found on Blu-ray discs.

It does support Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos (EAC3 + Atmos), which is the version used by Apple/Netflix/Amazon movie streaming services.

As far as I know, the only off-the-shelf streaming box that bitstreams (passthrough) TrueHD and TrueHD + Atmos is the Nvidia Shield (it also bitstreams dts-HD MA & dts:X).

You could also just run Plex Media Player on an HTPC(just make sure your HDMI port supports those bit streams). I use an intel skull canyon NUC to my onkyo stereo, 4k60hz(no HDR)
