I’ve been reading conflicting information about Plex, Atmos and Apple TV and would appreciate a definitive answer as I’m going to buy a soundbar with Atmos support.
Does the Plex app in Apple TV support EAC3 Atmos? I know it does not support TrueHD Atmos but that is not so important to me.
No. ATV-Plex app is built on pre ios12/2018 era API. No EAC3-Atmos.
If you want this today. Get the Infuse App, fantastic ATV-Plex client and talks to PMS seamlessly.
You shouldn’t be concerned with atmos support and a soundbar anyway, they are built small and cheap. Do not have the physical spacial width between drivers, nor driver size for either Truehd nor atmos to matter.
This is definitely not true. Especially with the higher end soundbars like Samsung, JBL and Sony etc. If he goes for the cheaper soundbars maybe that applies.
In a spare room I have the JBL Bar 1300X and it sounds as good as any dedicated AVR setup I’ve heard. I definitely notice the difference with Atmos and DTS:X content.
@Menel, I know about Infuse but my question was regarding the Plex app which is the one I currently use and the one I would like to keep on using.
@MrFancyPants1999 is right. A cheap soundbar would probably sound like crap. I have a more or less fine 5.1 setup which works OK but I was at a friends the other day who has a Samsung HW-Q990D soundbar and I must say that the sound experience with a movie with Dolby Atmos sound was…different. Better, if you ask me.
I’ve never liked to ping Plex employees or forum ninjas but I’d really, really, like to hear it from the horse’s mouth, and it’s not like I’m asking for some proprietary information, roadmaps or business secrets, so…
@Craig_Holliday because he is developing the new Plex ATV app and he should know
and
@OttoKerner because he is this forum’s factotum. Surely not many things he doesn’t know about Plex
Oooof that’s expensive for tiny drivers, didn’t know the corporations were milking people so much for mediocrity. Exactly thing kind of product I was referring to.
Dolby Digital
Incorrect Implementation
Dolby Digital Plus
Incorrect Implementation However, when you play Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus content, audio intended for the left and right surround channels also plays from the bar at the same time. This is true whether Smart Mode is on or off. As a result, you don’t get the same pinpoint localization of sound effects with this content— for example, a car seems like it’s coming from a general area, rather than an exact spot, as it races past.
Makes little sense to be fretting over audio extras, when audio basics aren’t covered. Undue headache, probably working as good as its going to work as is.
First, always feel free to ping me. It is much easier for me to find and reply if you do.
No the current player and even the new upcoming player do not have Atmos support.
Reviewing and tackling our Dolby support is on my list but unfortunately it is lower than some other priorities.
I will agree with Menel that if you want this today then Infuse is a great option for your specific setup.
I know it is another app but as others say it does handle playback very well on Apple TVs.
