Newbie - Server Build advice?

Hi all,

I am fairly new to the server side of things of computers but hands on experience with both Linux and Windows. I would like to build Plex server, ideally using the Fractal Node 804 as case.
I’ll be the only one using it for now and add 2-3 people later on but would like future proofing just in case.

The Node 804 can fit up to 10 drives but I am not sure which board micro-ITX with that many sata ports and/or components I need to do so. However, I am open to other suggestions!

Any suggestions would be great both in terms of hardware (especially), software and OS.

Most of my files will be 1080p HEVC so not sure which CPU/GPU to go for as well

Budget should not be a big issue but ofc the cheaper the better

Couple of questions:

  • can a P2000 transcode on Linux?
  • Is there any difference in image quality between QuickSync (in case of Intel CPU) and a NVEC?

Most comparisons I have found are centered around game streaming, but they often find the turing generation Nvidia products one step better than previous generation quicksync.

That said, QSV quality is exceptional by my eye, and I always run with qsv hardware transcoding enabled.

If I was building something new I would start with QSV while not locking out the possibility of adding a dedicated GPU in the future. Thats exactly what I did when I got this system, and have yet to find a reason to actually do it.

Thanks for the reply!
I read around that if Intel CPU with QS is available Plex will use that instead of using the GPU NVEC, how would you go around that?

Usually the bios can control this. I can’t say I have tried it myself, as I as living with what I have now till solutions that handle HDR tone mapping correctly materialize. I am hoping the Intel XE cards and the Nvidia ampre cards will do so.

I would go with quick sync first (it’s free with applicable intel cpu).

If for some reason you outgrow or otherwise don’t like QS, you can always buy an nvidia gpu later.

Thanks for the input!

Do you think you can give some input in high count hard drive builds while being compact?

not compact by any means, go big or go home

FreeBSD Enterprise 1 PB Storage

That’s looks a bit much for my needs

I was thinking more like an ATX or Micro ATX build with the Node 804 or R6
