Need help for hardware recommandation

Hi all,

I’m using Plex for years now and I think 2020 is the year to build a new Plex server. I’ve read thousand of topic in this forum and others website, but I’m still not convince, that’s why I need your help.

My Needs

  • Watching 4K movies
  • Sharing movies with friends and family. At this time, I’m sharing with 31 people, and max 7 peoples simultaneous
  • My player is a Shield TV Pro but most of my friend/family don’t have 4K TV
  • I won’t to have movies and TV Show in 1080p and 4K. only in 4K
  • my server must be able to run Plex & Docker

My Ideas

  • OS : Unraid ?
  • Case: Norcotek RPC-4220
  • CPU: I was thinking to buy a Ice Lake CPU with Quick Sync Video function but I didn’t find anyone compatible with ECC RAM. So my choice is more for a Intel® Xeon® E-2288G ? Should I take one or two?
  • GPU: Not sure to understand if we can use Quick Sync Video AND NVENC/NVDEC. Which Nvidia card would you recommand ?
  • Motherboard: SuperMicro X11SCM-F ?

I’ve read many times this page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/115002178853-using-hardware-accelerated-streaming/

But I’m still confuse, for example, I’ve seen some people using Quick Sync Video on Unraid Linux. But the matrix at the end show us only:

  1. Intel Video Acceleration (VAAPI)
  2. NVIDIA Encoder (NVENC)
  3. software encoder (x264)

I know there is thousand of tread talking about hardware, but I’m still confused, the price is not really an issue, I really want to invest, but of course I prefer to have the perfect configuration for that, that’s why I’m asking you for help.

thank you !
