Not sure if I missed it or not, How did the new Asus wireless router work out?
I had to order it online. Won’t come in until Sat. I’ll update you guys on Sunday. New Synology should come in next week sometime.
So the new Asus router came in. Hooked it up. I still have the same issues. Nothing is any better, although it’s nice to have 8 ports all in one location and in one device. Therefore, it has to be the Synology DS418play. My 918+ with 8GB RAM should come in later next week. I’ll report back at that time.
I did however determine an issue I had with my 4K GoPro videos. For some reason, when I originally moved them over to the Synology, the metadata didn’t transfer and therefore the files wouldn’t open or play properly. PMS couldn’t do anything with them. PC-based media players couldn’t open them either. I recopied/pasted them and they work fine now. Albeit with the buffering and the error message “the server isn’t powerful enough to convert this video for smooth playback. try playing the original quality.” Oddly, the dumbed-down, ugly GUI media player on the Sony TV plays them all just fine.
The Sony TV has the decoder to handle it even if the GUI is elementary.
Gang, I installed the new Synology DS918+ to replace the DS418Play. Also installed the new Gigabit router last week while I waited for the new Synology to come in.
My 4k home videos are still not playing smoothly over my TV, with the same error message that “the server is not powerful enough to play…” And it’s not working at all on my PC. Iphone 5s works for all other files except the 4k, during which I get the same error message while buffering.
I’ve attached the log.
I would like to point out that I didn’t do a clean install to the new Synology. I used the migration option so that I didn’t have to reload the hard drives with all my material. I did however install the correct version of DSM to the 918+.
Looking forward to your feedback and resolving this now that I’ve got the right infrastructure in place.
J_fo,
I am always reluctant to suggest a lower power NAS when someone “states” they want to run PMS on it. Plex documented that a CPU PassMark score of 2000 is needed for each 1080 stream that needs real-time trans-coding, I don’t know whats recommended for 4K but its going to take more horse power regardless. I have some questions below-
What version of PMS are you running and where did you download it from?
Was there any other users trying to use Plex when you tested it?
Was the client Wireless or wired?
In the end how many users are you going to want at once streaming media from Plex?
Since I did not know the specs for 4K streaming I just did a quick search and I don’t think your going to like it, Have a look at the link below and scroll down to the 7th post, One user “jjrjr1” reports his core i7 maxes out his CPU 100%
forums.plex.tv/discussion/209432/transcoding-4k-requirements
Read the whole thread I posted. Sorry for the bad news.
Update: If you can direct play to your devices it should be fine but if your 4k is needing real-time trans-coding I think your in trouble with that NAS.
I see your DS arrived and something isn’t working as expected?
May I see the log files (settings - server - help - download logs) captured immediately after trying to use hardware transcoding?
Apologies, I found your logs further in the scrollback.
Please do the following:
- Stop PMS
- Uninstall the package using Package Center
- Restart the DS918+
- Install PMS
- Open the dashboard in your browser.
- If any library scanning is running, please “Cancel Scan”
- Settings - Server - Transcoder Uncheck the box to enable HW transcoding & save.
- Come right back to it and enable & save again
- Now start a video to transcode. Do not use 4K HEVC HDR. Only a KabyLake class can do that.
Chuck,
Based on you response am I to take it the DS-918+ can real-time trans-code 4K? Based on my quick google search shows otherwise. If that’s true how many 1080p streams can it due? Not trying to start a problem only trying to learn. Can you tell me what PassMark score is recommended for 4k??
On a separate note, Your networking configuration is not optimal.
It is unwise to setup both adapters on the same subnet without using LACP to bind them as one IP.

LACP (Dynamic) is configured in Control Panel - Network - Network Interfaces.
Is your switch a managed (smart) or unmanaged switch?

I do not have a DS918+ to verify such a claim. I know definitively that it can do 1080P (2K). There are those who assert it can do low-bitrate 4K (handbraked) files. Again, I have no way to verify such claims and made my statement to make certain we are diagnosing in proper context.
Thanks for clearing that up.
That NAS has an Apollo Lake Celeron which have 6th Gen QuickSync Video ASICs. PMS should be able to HW decode 4K HEVC HDR. I believe the OP is only trying to decode 4K HEVC SDR. Hardware transcoding should work for that.
@J_fo Can you post the mediainfo of your home video?
ChuckPA,
I’m following your steps 1-9. However, I don’t see an option for
7.Settings - Server - Transcoder Uncheck the box to enable HW transcoding & save
I’m using PMS version 1.10.1.4602.
Am I missing something here?
You should be seeing this:
If not, you probably installed PMS from Synology’s Package Center download, OR, the server isn’t signed in under your plex.tv account (for it to activate)
If so, that’s why. They only distribute the 32 bit version. You’ll need to download the 64-bit version for Synology from http://downloads.plex.tv
As for my switch being managed or unmanaged, I updated the switch last week to an Asus RT-AC88U. I can change a setting or unplug one of the cables like Trumpy81 suggested. I’m pretty sure however that the new router/switch can do the job, but perhaps I didn’t set it up right. Let me know what’s best to do on this end.
Regarding your router, The support document for enabling LACP is here: https://www.asus.com/US/support/FAQ/1016088
You will want to enable it for the two ports your Synology is plugged into
The ports on your synology will create the bonded adapter. LAN1 and LAN2 will become BOND0 and will have one IP.
If properly configured in the router and NAS, PMS will see exactly that and your AC-88U will flash on both ports when there is traffic.
Done. Got the LACP and Bond0 working. Thanks for your help on that front. I’ve run the home videos on my various devices (TV, iPhones, etc.). Some things are working flawlessly, like my 4k home videos and some old 480i home videos. However my 1080i MP2 files on the TV are buffering and getting the “the server is not powerful enough to…”. I’ve attached the log and the data from one of the 1080i MP2 videos to see if we can troubleshoot.
Attached is the data from the media info for the file that won’t play properly.
