NFO file format for matching movies to IMDB

Server Version#: 1.23.3.4707
Player Version#: 4.57.4

This seems like a simple question but I have been searching for hours, reading lots of forum posts, and trying many different things but I can’t get it to work.

I do not want to edit the file names of my movies to add an imdb code as I have a large amount and they are organized by their file names so adding {imdb-tt0372784} to the end of the filename is out of the question, but many places and even recent posts from the past few months mention using an .nfo file to indicate the correct match.

However, I can’t find any mentions of what data needs to be in the file (just the tt number doesn’t work) or what the nfo file should be named (can I just use .nfo or plex.nfo or does it need to match the movie file’s name? none of these work for me).

So basically, with one movie per folder what do I name the nfo file and what do I put in the file?

I haven’t tested this, but it’s my understanding that .nfo files are only scanned when new media is first detected.

So renaming media or .nfo files may not be adequate to trigger .nfo file detection.

If you watch the logs, there are clear messages when an ID is extracted from a .nfo file.

Is this only for the new agent or does nfo files work with the older agent as well?

It should work with the old scanner as well.
But if it broke, it won’t be repaired.
