No Audio Output on mp3's and FLAC files - movies play fine

Server Version#: Version 1.29.2.6364 - on SERVER machine
Player Version#: I have no idea where this is on my client Windows machine. It’s not stated in the obvious spot under: Plex for Windows > Player.

Windows 10 desktop to Pioneer AVR via optical - so I am bit-streaming:

mp3’s - and FLAC’s - will not play. Everything else plays. I can play mpt3’s via WMP, VLC and others. Windows audio tests are fine.

Does Plex not convert mp3’s - or FLAC’s - to PCM?

A week later - no one can tell me why I cannot play standard mp3 files on Plex?

Folks - if I Plex is the only tool that cannot play mp3’s then we have a problem. What do you need from me to troubleshoot?

BTW: Plex pushed an update on this machine to: Version 1.60.1.3413-533a7645. no change in behavior.

With the above settings, regular DTS and AC3 are bitstreamed over your toslink connection. i.e. the audio data are not changed in any way. While doing this, the volume slider of the player has no effect.

All the other audio formats however need to be decoded by the player to PCM stereo. This is where the volume slider of the player also becomes effective again.

Wiggle your mouse pointer over the picture during playback. The volume slider is at the bottom right of the player bar. See that it’s not muted or lowered to zero.

Thanks Otto - for jumping in. I have a yellow bar and have tried moving it up and down:

I note that wheter I click on the album play button - or the track play button - the status shows as play - (yellow speaker) but I do not get an audio meter and I hear nothing.

If I go to a DTS encoded mka file - bitstreams and I hear surround audio… if I play a movie, I get audio. But when I play a stereo mp3 file I get nada.

And as stated earlier, on the same W10 PC, I can play mp3s through numerous players like WMP. It will also paly on-line sources like Youtube. I don’t get it.

Other symptoms:

  • I see no audio meters. Just the yellow speaker icon indicating that it’s playing.
  • I see no elapsed time changing - yet it will move on to the next track in the album at approximately the correct time.

Are you using some wireless speakers?
i.e. have you used the Cast icon to connect the web app to another device?

Is there other media player or audio software on your computer active which could potentially “lock” the audio device for its own use?
I’ve never seen such behaviour except when there was no usable audio device.

  • No wireless speakers
  • Not even sure what the “cast icon” is - is this in Plex or Windows?
  • Locking the audio software: Did you mean hardware? I’ve tried both settings actually - no change in behaviour:

Right now exclusive control is not enabled.

You mean usable to Plex? it will bit stream to it no problem - obviously it sees the hardware.

Try setting that to 48 kHz sample rate, 16 bit.

Yea - I tried 16/48 and 16/44.1. No joy.

Anyway - that’s just a default and this should be set by the app.

The original TOSlink specification only knew maximum 48 kHz at maximum 20 bit resolution. You should set the default this or below this. Because not all apps are telling the audio output which parameters to switch to.
This is not ASIO or similar.

Yup its normally set to 16/48. I’ve been trying different settings to wake something up.

Now playing an mp3 file, I get the following dialogue:

Playback Error:
An unknown error occurred (4294967282)
Error code: 4294967282
[Skip] [Retry]

I’ll reboot the system… I can’t believe I’ve spent hours trying to get audio output of mp3 files.

On a restart I get the same. Should I try to uninstall and reinstall?

Start by enabling Debug logging in the app.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/windows-mac-app-logs/

Recreate the issue, then fetch the log.
Zip it and drag the zip file into the message editor here.

Nothing seems to be easy here… I get the following:

Do I have to quit Plex before I try to zip? - those instructions did not state.

I quit Plex first… that worked - might want to add that to instructions in that link.

Logs.zip (916.5 KB)

This has gone from bad to worse - movies no longer play.

When I set the playback settings to the Realtek Digital Output - nothing happens. Video won’t start. When I change the audio device to “auto select device” it plays in stereo - instead of bit streaming the DTS 5.1 to the AVR. Why? It is still using the toslink output… it clear Plex knows that there is a DTS 5.1 stream… but it downgrades to stereo PCM - my Pioneer AVR says so:

when I try to change it back to the specific audio device… audio is muted… or if the video is stopped, it won’t even start.

The player is trying to enable “exclusive mode” which is getting denied by the audio driver.
As a result, the audio interface is never unlocked.

You might wanna try enabling “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”
or disable the equivalent option in the Plex app to use “exclusive mode”

I tried that earlier - and just changed my system to do this again …and no-go.

Do I need to restart when I make these changes in Plex?

I also tried this:

Still no audio playback.

BTW - I tried the audio troubleshooter numerous times… Windows does not detect problems and test sounds work. I can continue to play files in WMP as well. The only thing not working is Plex.

Closing and reopening the app can’t hurt, but won’t usually be required.

Nope - and tried a Windows restart too.

Setting are currently this:

Still no playback.

BTW - now that Plex is running in Exclusive mode, WMP will not play. I don’t have a problem with that - but obviously Plex has to work.

Logs again?
