Server Version#: Version 1.29.2.6364 - on SERVER machine
Player Version#: I have no idea where this is on my client Windows machine. It’s not stated in the obvious spot under: Plex for Windows > Player.
Windows 10 desktop to Pioneer AVR via optical - so I am bit-streaming:
With the above settings, regular DTS and AC3 are bitstreamed over your toslink connection. i.e. the audio data are not changed in any way. While doing this, the volume slider of the player has no effect.
All the other audio formats however need to be decoded by the player to PCM stereo. This is where the volume slider of the player also becomes effective again.
Wiggle your mouse pointer over the picture during playback. The volume slider is at the bottom right of the player bar. See that it’s not muted or lowered to zero.
I note that wheter I click on the album play button - or the track play button - the status shows as play - (yellow speaker) but I do not get an audio meter and I hear nothing.
If I go to a DTS encoded mka file - bitstreams and I hear surround audio… if I play a movie, I get audio. But when I play a stereo mp3 file I get nada.
And as stated earlier, on the same W10 PC, I can play mp3s through numerous players like WMP. It will also paly on-line sources like Youtube. I don’t get it.
Other symptoms:
I see no audio meters. Just the yellow speaker icon indicating that it’s playing.
I see no elapsed time changing - yet it will move on to the next track in the album at approximately the correct time.
Are you using some wireless speakers?
i.e. have you used the Cast icon to connect the web app to another device?
Is there other media player or audio software on your computer active which could potentially “lock” the audio device for its own use?
I’ve never seen such behaviour except when there was no usable audio device.
The original TOSlink specification only knew maximum 48 kHz at maximum 20 bit resolution. You should set the default this or below this. Because not all apps are telling the audio output which parameters to switch to.
This is not ASIO or similar.
This has gone from bad to worse - movies no longer play.
When I set the playback settings to the Realtek Digital Output - nothing happens. Video won’t start. When I change the audio device to “auto select device” it plays in stereo - instead of bit streaming the DTS 5.1 to the AVR. Why? It is still using the toslink output… it clear Plex knows that there is a DTS 5.1 stream… but it downgrades to stereo PCM - my Pioneer AVR says so:
The player is trying to enable “exclusive mode” which is getting denied by the audio driver.
As a result, the audio interface is never unlocked.

You might wanna try enabling “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”
or disable the equivalent option in the Plex app to use “exclusive mode”
BTW - I tried the audio troubleshooter numerous times… Windows does not detect problems and test sounds work. I can continue to play files in WMP as well. The only thing not working is Plex.
