No full video on 4K TV

This is my first time looking into the mpv config file. Where are the specifications for this file documented by chance?

Here you go: mpv.io
Keep in mind that you cannot use all of these parameters in a Plex player. Some of them are overridden by Plex, particularly those for which there is a setting in the Plex user interface.

Awesome and thank you for that. I figured some of these (like GPU configurations) are going to be Plex engine based.

Attempting the configuration above, I am able to successfully change the aspect ratio… but it’s the aspect ratio within the existing aspect ratio of Plex HTPC’s screen… which is not resizing to the full wide screen format (in my case I’m trying to resize both the Plex HTPC app and video sizes to 1.85:1). Windows detects and resizes correctly… Plex just resizes itself it seems. Not sure if there’s an override for that.

stretch-image-subs-to-screen=yes
monitoraspect=1.85
keepaspect=yes
cache=yes
mpv:set video-zoom=0

Maybe something like native-fs ?

I am a bit confused.
Keep in mind that this setting only affects the video size. So you need to start playback in order to test it.

The user interface will always be in 16:9 ratio.

Plex’s HTPC interface seems to lower the resolution from native 4k and crop itself. The videos then seemed to be cropped within that space further:

So what happens if you use CTRL+ during video playback?

The last screenshot shows the regular “10-foot” plex user interface. Use the arrow keys to go right and then down.

Just a zoom writhing the already cropped bounds of Plex HTPC

What are the pixel dimensions which are reported by this device to Windows?

Did you enable resolution switching or refresh rate switching?

This is where I think the problem source is from

One of the reasons I’m seeking an override

Both refresh and resolution switching are enabled.

Disable switching and compare.

Do also try with Windows resolution set to 3840x2160.

Also, it clearly says (native) after the full HD resolution. Which means there is zero advantage to deliver more resolution to the display.

Lowering the Windows resolution will definitely crop from the full projector screen size rather scale, but I can at least confirm Plex doesn’t crop itself here.

Already tried disabling refresh and resolution switching too. Whatever changes seem to be happening seem to be locked to the resolution of the Plex HTPC client resolution (which doesn’t seem to read proper 4k).

What type of TV is this?

Nah, the native label on the driver is mislabeled. Windows, frankly, is a terrible operating system around higher resolution handling. The native display output is pure 4k for the device.

Also, regarding down sampling closer to faux 4k, basically lowers the cropping from windows to Plex… which isn’t the desired effect but expected.

I’m also seeing some other complaint about Plex HTPC not picking up full 4k resolutions and impacting video cropping :frowning: Reddit - Dive into anything

I guess this is a case of living on the “bleeding edge” and getting cut.

True 4K cinema resolution (as opposed to UHD Bluray rez) is pushing the boundaries and there simply might haven’t been any devices available to the developers (of both mpv and Plex) to test this use case.

Unfortunately I have no solution for you.
I can only add your report to the bug list.

Ha, it’s been a few years since I’ve had this setup (just my first time using Plex HTPC like this). I’d actually consider 8k to be the bleeding edge side of things now-a-days. I appreciate the bug list add though. Seems like that would be the best path forward here.

And yeah, test devices that require hardware… makes everything hard.

So your goal is to automatically stretch all your 3840x2160 (UHD) content to fit your monitor that has a max resolution of 4096x2160 (DCI4K) @ 60 Hz?

You might -

  • Set Windows to DCI4K
  • Set HTPC Resolution to Auto
  • Playback a UHD video for 30 sec. and download HTPC logs.
  • Zip and upload them.

You can install mpv standalone and sort out the best mpv.conf
