Many Xeon processors do not have the QSV feature. Intel Ark can tell you if QSV is supported on a specific Xeon cpu.
To add about the QSV / i915 detection (thanks @edified )
I’m writing the new packaging updates which is more cognizant of the hardware (HDR Tone Mapping support).
To that end, I have 5 Xeon CPUs (listed by SKU) which support HW transcoding & have a GPU for tone mapping).
Xeon SKU: 1250 1270 1275 1290 10885
Any additional models are welcomed:
I have an E5-1620 (v1) and a pair of E5-2665 (also v1) that I’d be more than happy to perform any testing, both currently run ESXi 6.7U3: Intel® Product Specification Comparison
Unsure if my ancient GPUs can do much, but i’ve been meaning to try and set aside some time to tinker with passing through to an Ubuntu VM. Windows VMs were causing fatal errors and bringing my entire host down in the past, so I got frustrated and gave up. Works fine on the other VMware box.
EDIT: Checked the nVidia support matrix above, unfortunately my old “Fermi” architecture is ways beyond EoL.
