Hi. I currently own a Sony Bravia TV running Android TV 8.0.0 and it seems like i’t can’t play HEVC video or AAC audio on the plex app directly. This is a huge bummer since a lot of my 4K media is in this format and my server isn’t powerful enough to transcode it nor am I looking forward to transcoding it and losing quality. This is also very odd since I can play it through direct play using VLC and Plex’s UPNP Server on the TV. Am I missing something here?
Hi
You can use Kodi with Plex plugin to software decoding if your TV doesn’t support some format. That way it is not needed to transcode. Are you sure HEVC is not supported? Have you tried HEVC with AC3 or DTS?
Also if it is only the audio not compatible turning off subtitles will stop the transcoding of the video part.
VLC can play anything because it has software decoders but Plex only allow hardware decoding (if I am not mistaken).
Yes. This is a limitation in Plex. If audio is transcoded then the subtitle must be burned into the video stream (that is why it is transcoded too) to be able to keep the audio and subtitle in sync. this is what they say.
