Plex for Android TV forcing transcode on 4K HEVC when native player works fine

Hello,

I am trying to stream some 4K HEVC content on my Sony KD-43X8305C Android TV, but Plex forces transcoding which a) reduces quality and b) my server isn’t powerful enough to keep up with.

What’s weird is that if I open the native video player app that comes with the TV, and access Plex via DLNA, I can stream the same content without any problems (and it looks gorgeous and smooth).

Is there a bug with the Plex client on Android TV not advertising which formats can be decoded by the system?

This is really frustrating.

Known bug, check the AndroidTV forum.

I tried searching there before posting but couldn’t find any definitive answer. Lot’s of people with problems playing HEVC but nothing official.

Is there a specific post you had in mind?

Not having a bug tracker so that we don’t duplicate posts and so that we can receive updates on our problems is really frustrating :frowning:
