Hi folks, so plex is behaving again now i am on the new version but I have a few things I dont quite understand and I wondered if some kind soul would help out… I havnt supplied any specs as I figured these questions are valid for any spec of system.
Im upgrading my server, Ive been given 32Gb of DDR3 and a GTX960. I see from Elpamsoft that the card can do 13 Transcodes (1080p 10bit to 720p) with the driver hack… CPU is 3770k.
So, heres where im getting confused. Ive read that using a ram drive for the transcoder directory is good… I have it on a 3.5 atm. I think I read that the RAM Disk should be as big as your biggest file… Is this correct so far?
Right so lets say HW transcoding is set, the card is doing transcoding, is Plex still using the transcoder directory? If yes then does the ramdrive need to be big enough for however many files are been streamed? Lets say it has 4 streams and each file is 10gig. Does the ramdrive need to be 40gb? Im just wondering if i should get a second hand ssd instead, I know it will be faster than the 3.5 but also its not good for SSD, I can get something for £25 120gb.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks.
If you compare nowaday’s RAM prices and SSD’s, I 'd say go with the SSD drive.
Just my $0.02
Thanks for the speedy reply, given that I already have 32GB of ram that will depend on the answers to my questions on transcoding.
Well, you can have smaller transcoder drives, but then the already “played” transcoded data “chunks” will get thrown away even before the movie has been played to the end.
Which then requires the transcoder to re-transcode, if the user decides to jump back in the time line.
Not a particularly big issue if your users are mainly watching linearly.
Usually, your system RAM is better used as file cache for the OS. Which is the default in any Operating System I know.
Ah ok, thank you very much. I think I will just buy a second hand ssd then, I would rather have the room for the transcodes…
