No Surround Sound on HD recordings (UK)

I’m not getting 5.1 surround on any HD recordings - just 2.0 stereo. I’ve confirmed that this is a problem with my Plex DVR setup by recording the same show on a Humax Freeview HD recorder at the same time (5.1 on Humax, 2.0 on Plex DVR).

I’m in London, UK, running Plex Server Beta Four (Redux) on a Windows 10 Intel NUC 6i5. DVR device is an HDHR Connect. Recordings are saved on a QNAP NAS.

Ill have a choice. Standard also stereo

Thanks for the suggestion, Henk_R, but I’m not seeing the same recorded audio options you’re getting. Here’s a screenshot of my recording of last night’s new BBC1 drama, Taboo. This is a major new production broadcast in 1080p with 5.1 surround, but my setup has saved AAC_LATM Stereo?

Oké i am using a Mac mini MacOS 10.11.6, in holland, the files i record are TS files and just like the recordings on the Humax there are 2 sound canals and also subtitels. Ill don’t know why this is different in your situation
Also flex Beta 4 Version 1.2.0.3167 and a HDHomeRun EXPAND last version

Problem continues for me. I used Plex DVR to record new Endeavour S04E01 from ITV1 HD and got 1080p video and AAC_LATM Stereo audio. At the same time on the same aerial (antenna) my Humax recorded the same show with 5.1 surround.

However, same evening I also recorded the new Sherlock S04E02 from BBC1 HD and Plex DVR saved AAC_LATM 5.1! So this is an inconsistent issue.

Are there any know issues regarding 5.1 surround?

Are you sure you’re getting true DD 5.1 from ITV? I thought they still sent all their programmes out as DD 2.0 (but matrix-encoded for Dolby Pro-Logic surround)?

Thanks, stoli412. That will be it. I have a Denon AVR, and it must be decoding Pro-Logic from ITV recordings played from the Humax.

Reading around on the web I see this has been an issue for years. Seems the licence fees and equipment required to broadcast DD 5.1 is something ITV (among others) are not prepared to pay for.

Any progress on this? I know stoli412 answer was accepted, but it doesn’t explain why real 5.1 broadcasts on BBC/ITV/CH4 are being flagged and played back as stereo.

I’m still getting a stereo down mix from programmes recorded from HD 5.1 sources - such as last night’s BBC Doctor Who.

This is a direct TS recording, no transcoding.

For comparison, here is the analysis of the same programme (last night’s Dr Who) TS file, recorded via a Humax HDR-Fox T2.

It is really rather a show stopper!

i got surround sound ok, in my recoding when i playback via kodi 17.1 on my ODroid-C2 and my MacBook Pro

mediainfo and plex will only show what is detect at the beginning of the file, ie before the show has started, that part is 2.0.

also recorded Flatliner’s on BBC 1 HD last night got AAC 5.1 as well.

Interesting, thanks.

I’m definitely not getting 5.1 flagged up within Plex - either via PlexWeb, OpenPHT or AppleTV.

If I play the file I do get a 5.1 track though! I think this must be a case of incorrectly tagging the metadata, although your screenshots do not match mine!

Plex Web. Note no 5.1 indication.

MKVTools for same TS file

if you crop the file so it starts at DW start and re-scrape it will show 5.1, but as i said only sees the audio tracks for the beginning of the file.

i have not cropped mine yet.

Its because adverts are played at 2.0 then switch to 5.1 once the show starts so it’s showing the codec used initially as it’s 2.0 the minute before the show starts.

Hi,

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I am in the same boat so to speak, ie. in the UK, all recordings are flagged as 2.0 stereo.

now, I understand the problem (as in the add’s/links/etc all being in 2.0) so what I am looking for is a automated (post-processing script?) to strip out the lead and so that 5.1 is picked up.

I have looked at this thread, but would like some feedback on if this is the way to go before I jump in.

In an ideal world, what I need is to be able to take the recoded .ts, top/tail it, re-compile it, then save as .mp4/.MKV all with 5.1 intact.

many thanks for your help - this is all new to me.

for reff, I have:

Win7 PC with 4 core Xeon X5470 (3.33GHz), 8MB ram
Nas box disk storage (on Gig ethernet)
HDHomeRun Connect (UK)
Plex Server Version 1.9.6.4429

Anybody?

Not being funny, but this is a real problem, the broadcast stream has two sound tracks, both 2 channel and 5, yet Plex can’t manage the resulting .ts file properly.
