It’s (quite) possible that for various artists, you need compilation bit checked and/or the album artist set (which is pretty “VA 101”).
so an update here - after testing countless permutations and one database recovery from all the adds/removals, I ended up biting the bullet and just tagging every track with an “Album Artist”.
This seems to have resolved most of my issues, however, there are still some lingering tracks/albums that despite having this set (or the compilation bit set) show up as separate in the UI.
Compare the content of the Album Title tag. It must be absolutely identical in all tracks.
Do also make sure that all tracks have their Track Number tag populated.
I also recommend populating the Disc Number tag, even on single disc releases.

Album title is set properly. First thing I checked. I am pretty sure track numbers are good too. I need to check disc though as I did not verify that, and I know the Pete Tong album above is a multi-disc album.
Use only integer numbers.
“Vinyl format” (“1A” / “1B” etc.) is not supported
so it was the disc numbers that were messing it up. I also removed the compilation bit and it picks up fine. Going to check the disc numbers on a few others that are showing multiple entries and will report back.
We have a winner @OttoKerner! This along with @elan’s suggestions ultimately fixed it. The missing disc numbers were causing all types of chaos, which seems strange because it was also affecting single disc VA compilations. Anyway, dunno. Glad its working although it was a huge exercise in patience.
To anyone looking, TLDR - uncheck “prefer local metadata”, set “Album Artist” and make sure “Track Number” “Disc Numbers” are filled out.

I also wanted to add for anyone searching or having a similar issue, I somehow missed that albums can be easily merged using the GUI. For someone like me with a ton of DJ mixes, mashups, bootlegs and other officially unreleased material this helps aggregate them all into one ‘Unknown Album’ entry under the artists name.
