Not Allowed to use Hetzner

I am on hetzner as well

I just got that email also, but I’ve been off Hetzner for about 3 months. My only Plex instance I have ATM is hosted at my home.

What kind of mass punishment tyrannical nonsense is this

What the… Hetzner is the only provider that meets my requirements. How the hell are you supposed to stream 4k remuxes from home to friends with 50 MBit Upload? That’s so stupid.

hetzner has a huge ammount of IPs and i don’t think they are a ā€œplex service providerā€.
still hope thats a false positive.

Important notice about the hosting service you may be using.

Due to the large-scale violations occurring from that hosting provider, we will be taking action soon to block access and activity from Plex Media Servers hosted by that provider. We will start these blocks on Thursday, October 12, 2023.

  • What hosting service MAY be affected?
  • What are the large-scale violations occurring from that hosting provider?
  • Which TOS is violated?

Frankly I assumed it’s a scam as this is a complete FUD mail.

Please provide additional information.

It’s legit. Me and some friends who all use Hetzner also got the mail. Here are more informations in the reddit thread: Reddit - Dive into anything

Wow, because of some stupid people who are violating the terms of services you are going to block one of the biggest hosters in europe from using plex services?

If you do that it will be the last time for me using Plex.

What a joke

I just got the e-mail, time to charge back plex plass. I hope users that bought lifetime plex will do the same, ask for refund and if not given charge back. My home connection is capped at 100Mbits and I have less than 15 people on my server, there is no way my connection can’t handle it, that’s why I’m using hetzner, they are the cheapest and best support you can buy for your money. This move is a middle finger to loyal plex users. I’m going to ask for a refund and if not given, a charge back it will be.

Cause it seems like everyone here is using Hetzner and got the mail. Same with me.
If you got the email, you probably tried an Herzner VPS/server/whatever and registered Plex with it. It doesn’t need to be still active.

What I don’t like about this whole situation is that:

  • they got servers IP addresses
  • they looked them up to check if they were in the Hetzner subnet
  • They associated IP addresses with USERS
  • They concluded that every Hetzner customer is a criminal, thus they block the whole Hetzner subnets.

There is an option to manually enter the server IP address on the client apps. Does this blocking affect that too?

It’s done I have canceled my Plex month subscription…

Stupid question, but you can set up custom url for the server,
Can avoid blocking by proxying trought cloudflare for example

Hetzner has a very good price/performance ratio, so obviously it’s liked by many ā€œgoodā€ and ā€œbadā€ people alike. Instad of switching to another hosting provider as suggested by Plex, I think I’m going to be switching to an alternative to Plex. Going to suck losing my watch data, tho.

Wow.

The groups that are using the Hetzner platform currently to provide shared access would surely move in an instant to another provider. Does Plex understand what cloud means? These are for profit services so they aren’t just going to say ā€œoh hey, Plex caught us. Time to close up shopā€. No, they will move with ease to another provider.

So what next, block OVH? Block LeaseWeb? Block every hosting provider in the world and only allow residential IP ranges? There are VPN / proxy providers that serve access from residential IP ranges…

Honestly, this approach shows a complete lack of understanding and I really regret buying a lifetime pass. Lesson learned.

Like others have said it’s time to explore other options, as past events have shown you cannot predict what ill-informed decision Plex will make next.

Surely something as simple as routing a VPN should work round this?

This seems like a pretty dumb way to address the issue which presumably underlies this (paid Plex hosting of third-party content). They’ll just end up having to ban all hosting providers over time, and even then people will find workarounds. Why not fix this in the software they own and have exclusive source code access to instead?

I’m using a cloudflare proxy and still got the email. I’m not sure what exactly they are doing to check the provider, but I believe they are directly on the server performing some actions to identify if it’s part of Hetzner’s network.

Someone is eventually going to figure out a workaround, but I run it on Hetzner because of convenience and don’t want to play cat and mouse. I don’t need a computer at home running 24/7 and don’t need to depend on my stupid home internet when I’m traveling. Moving to another provider also doesn’t make sense as they will probably lock down every low-cost provider eventually.

I was a huge ambassador for Plex, would always recommend them to everyone. Man, this is going to hurt their reputation. They must be aware that thousands of their customers use Hetzner. Someone is squeezing them really hard.
