I think you are correct: I went to the list of my devices, and under “Server” I saw that a few Plex instances were still linked to my account. It may very well be that one of them was installed on a Hetzner machine. I remember doing some testing a while ago using their new ARM instances.
On server: Custom server access URLs in settings and disable remote access. All your clients will access from the URL that you provided.
Just to summon this up, dear Plex: You changed your TOS to “You may only host Plex where we allow you to host it”, retroactively for users who paid for your software? Because a subgroup of your users abused it? And you claim this to be a clever solution?
That’s an absolutely smart move, as history proves! Successful companies such as Napster or Rapidshare also blindly followed such an approach, and hey - look where they stand nowadays!
Dear Sirs and Madams at Plex: I sincerely wish for your company to go bankrupt, because this level of customer orientation should not be allowed in the market. I’ll try to get a chargeback for my lifetime license and will move on to a better solution.
Thanks I will test that one.
It’s realy not a problem, it took about ten minutes. Install emby, point to files that are already there. Remove plex, cancel plex pass auto renewal.
Don’t buy a lifetime pass for anything. It’s a silly thing to do.
There’s even a custom theme to make it look like plex if that bothers you.
Plex wants to be the new budweiser
I’ve had a response from Hetzner support who say they’re aware of what’s going on and have attempted to reach out to Plex and are hoping they will be able to resolve the issue but they can’t provide any more details at this time.
Wtf? Is this legal in Germany? I dont think so.
I own a lifetime pass, but i dont host my plex on my hetzner server (which i own).
But wtf are u doin? U cant block a full hoster, because a few people did bad things.
Whats next? Block all austrian people because a few people there shared pirate stuff?
I think there are better ways to block such people…
As someone who uses Plex legally, but often has his content also at hetzner, I think this move is stupid.
As one of the Hetzner users that’s being punished for the actions of unrelated 3rd parties, I’ve lost any and all confidence in Plex.
I don’t have the conditions at home to run a media server, and even if I were to change servers I have absolutely no faith that Plex wouldn’t catch me in another arbitrary block.
I’m pretty sure this move runs afoul to EU customer protection legislation, and I’ve requested a refund.
Haha, i’m not really a Linux power user so i imagine it’ll take me a little longer, but i’ll struggle through, just need to make a decision on which platform to use, it’s a shame Emby doesn’t have a demo on their site (that i can find)
I will admit that I’ll miss the user experience in Plex, I may actually use that theme if i pick Emby
I knew Jellyfin was our future sooner or later just because of the open source nature, unfortunately Plex just made that a bit sooner.
Not even tripping about my lifetime membership since I’ve used it for over 10 years. It was a fun ride, best of luck with your future endeavors but you guys have clearly forgotten where you came from. sellouts
More than anything I am heartbroken by the actions that have been taken here. You broke the trust we had and for that, things can never go back to the way they were.
Since Plex is blocking us legitimate users. We can surely expect a full refund on our lifetime Plex pass?
That’s sad news. I’ve gotten years worth of my Lifetime Plex Pass, so I can’t really complain about that part I guess. But I do think it’s a weird route to go with… Why ban all the IPs? As other users have commented, what’s next?
The pirated servers / “Plex Shares” will just find another common hosting provider to go with. It seems like a very shortsighted “solution”.
The whole reason I’m using Hetzner, is because my connection at home is not sufficient at all, when it comes to upload speed. I’m still using a cloud storage provider, not in the terabytes at all, but it’s a setup that works very well for me, since my upload speed sucks, and the Hetzner VPS takes care of that.
Guess I’ll have to go to Jellyfin.
Super disappointed in this blunt enforcement. The fact you have a team of engineers, and you can’t come up with a better solution other than banning an entire massive host is unacceptable.
My upload speed is non-existent and rely on hetzner servers because they’re affordable. I don’t sell access, and I sure as hell don’t fall in to anything you’d be preventing nefarious users from doing by banning us all.
I am a plex pass lifetime member, and it’s just not feasible for me to migrate my server to a new host.
You guys need to do better, and find a solution that doesn’t punish people who are NOT selling ■■■■.
Can a plex employee at least confirm that they’re working on a better solution?.. OR IS THIS LEGIT THE ROUTE YOU’RE GOING?
Why? What you purchased in the plex pass (i.e. additional functions within the server and apps) is still available to you. The plex pass has nothing to do with where the server is installed.
Would you have the same opinion if they blocked your whole home ISP?
Yes. The pass I’ve paid for would still work in the exact way it was described when I bought it.
Except it would be useless to you, and you were blocked from using it.
But I guess you are not interested in an actual discussion and are just riding on semantics because you are luckily not affected. If it was your ISP, you would have the identical reaction.
They’ve added new limitations onto the license, thus it’s a change in contract, so no, it’s not working the way it was initially intended
