"Not fast enough to stream"?

For My users it started on June 26th, which may be coincidence, but also corresponds with an update to the media server

@clowrym That is also around the same time I started hearing complaints. Perhaps the latest Plex Server update has some issues. Interesting that it would only impact Roku devices though.

Noticed there’s a new server update for Plex Pass. Anyone tried it yet? I updated, but I’m away from home and can’t check playback on the Roku at the moment.

My users say the problem persists on both 1.13.2.5154 and 1.13.3.5223. Any server versions prior to those were well before the issue began. Like @clowrym, it was around the 26th or 27th that people started having trouble with Roku devices.

I have not yet tried 1.13.4.5251. Can anyone report that it has fixed the issue?

Currently running: Linux 1.13.2.5154, upgrading to 1.13.4.5251 right now and will check with Roku players tonight

My users also started reporting this sometime in the last few weeks. I wrote the first report off until I had two more people report the exact same symptoms as described in this thread. I went after a local network red herring before finding this thread.

I can confirm at least one of my users is still having the problem with server version 1.13.4.5251 (Debian 9 x64) on a 2017 Roku Premiere stick. I am NOT able to reproduce it on my internal network with a 2017 Roku Ultra.

I dug this out of the logs just now while my user was testing for me:

https://pastebin.com/q66jE7Hx

The issue appears to be on the client side, as far as the server is concerned:

Jul 12, 2018 20:47:49.558 [0x7f887dfff700] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 424898 bytes: 104 - Connection reset by peer

Edit: I’m being told the interruptions are (so far) less frequent then before installing server 1.13.4.5251, but it’s a poor sample size so far.

I had the server upgrade to 1.13.4.5251, started streaming a movie and the same exact issues occured. Latest updat seems to have not fixed the issues between Plex and Roku

@markus101, tagging you here to take a look at this thread. Thanks.

I have replaced one of my users roku with a new one…wanted to upgrade anyway, but this time & set direct play to forced which seems to have stopped the Buffering problem on everything. The only issue is with sound, but I believe that is related to the older TV not supporting some of the newer formats…

I have taken the Roku 3 back to my house & don’t have an issue on my local network, so it seems to be during transcode/remote sessions only.

I’ve seen this issue with direct play & direct stream on my local network with the Premiere+, so it’s definitely not limited to transcode/remote.

Latest update did not fix my Roku users problems.

So, any update from the Plex team on this?

Using remote (not local, but lots of extra bandwidth), forcing direct play did not help my Premiere+. As OP stated, casting to the Roku from Android still works.

Just thought I would throw myself in as well.

My issue is with a remote user. Roku buffers for no apparent reason. Been going on for weeks now.

Setup on my end. FiOS gigabit connection into UniFi switches and AP. Server is on a QNAP NAS with an i5, 8GB RAM, latest version of Plex server, gigabit wired connection. No issues streaming locally to a Roku Ultra wired or wireless.

Setup on the parents end. Charter 60 megabit connection into an AirPort Extreme. Split out by a Cisco SG200-50 switch to a Roku Ultra with the latest software. Network performance shows no signs of trouble. Wired or wireless makes no difference in terms of buffering which usually starts a few minutes into viewing. Plex app on the Roku is set to max out at 4 mbps 720p. Transcoding load on my end is minimal.

I probably have some logs but I don’t know if they will be of much use.

This is exactly the same problem we’re seeing across various Roku devices, and I can say on LG SmartTV’s (myself and another user in a different thread). My server is a VPS, so all clients are remote. And…no answer from PLEX staff yet, still waiting.

anyone seen anything from PLEX staff related to this problem?

They seem to have more than they can juggle. LG clients are maybe worse off than Roku. That thread got at least a semi-official acknowledgement. I’m not saying this out of bitterness or anything, but I’m installing Emby right now. I’ve become more reliant on Plex for all TV over time, but in the last month or two Plex has become too flaky to rely on. The fixes take weeks and the new features (live TV) are useless to me because all the networks offer that content for streaming anyway. All this is for local weather and news? Anyway, now I will have an alternative when this happens.

I’m pretty pissed because I moved all of my family users from FireTV sticks to Rokus after whatever happened last year. At least an acknowledgement that Plex is aware that Roku playback is broken and it’s being worked on would go a long way in convincing me I don’t need to replace Plex next, because the all love the Rokus otherwise.

I’m getting tired of telling people ā€œyes it’s broken, there’s nothing I can do, I have no idea if they’re working on it or notā€.

Agreed. I’ve been with PLEX and ROKU’s for years now, and this is the first instance of anything like this. In the past issues have been on the server, but not the client, and not to this degree. The inability to submit a bug report or directly notify PLEX of anything wrong with their software is a major customer service fail. I’m not big on tweeting, but a few tweets to @PLEX might get some interest. I don’t like to shout out in public, but you’re kinda forced to. I know LG is an issue right now, as one of my clients is LG and it’s unplayable. At least with the ROKU I can cast to it.

I wish a Plex Employee would at least comment acknowledging that there is a problem.

@anon18523487, @sa2000 anyone?

Two weeks in, and still no word from PLEX.
