@charliemurphy yes, the remote logs are streamed in as the are logged, no need to do anything else. We will investigate the logs more throughly and let you know if we find anything.
Note that at 18:56 your available bandwidth shot up, which is exactly the timeframe you flung the UHD content. The logs indicate a bandwidth issue, but it seems suspect that for some reason, when you play media from the channel the bandwidth deteriorates, yet when flung, it goes back to excellent.
I asked in another comment a couple minutes earlier, but I’m looking for someone to share their server with me directly ljunkie+testing so I can try to troubleshoot this from a device I can monitor locally here. If you can, please do and let me know.
No worries on sharing the server. We’ll wait for someone that is able to. In the mean time, we’ll continue trying to replicate here. As I mentioned, I run my server remotely too and haven’t been able to replicate this. I also haven’t had anyone I share the server with experience this either - they all use Roku. I do trust there is something going on here, it’s just not a global issue nor is it one we can replicate yet.
TY for investigating this.
Just to list anything unusual, my server is Dockerized on Ubuntu Server - Xenial. My client-side router is open-sourced (Tomato), server side is Netgear r7000 with stock firmware. No QoS on either end right now. This setup has been solid for 2 years, just listing my setup to see if any other who share this issue might have something in common.
@Ijunkie. I’m not sure what to make of the data you pulled. The server in this case is an Nvidia Shield. But the same issue occurs when using plex server in Unraid. Now on Unraid I also fired up Emby server and it plays to the same Roku without issue (direct steaming). Plex on this roku worked fine for the past year. This started a few weeks ago. I had tried lowering the bandwidth on the Roku down to .7 last week, but it made no difference, in that it still failed about 20-30 minutes in. I can try it again and send you the info again. It may be a few days before I can get back to the remote location of the Roku. Could it be the ISP pinching the stream? The user and myself are both on Frontier.
Speed test from my iPhone over wi-fi on the same router that my Roku is hardwired to. Just curious how it’s a bandwidth issue either at original resolution or 4Mbps unless I’m missing how Plex server works.
I can also confirm the same symptoms at the same timeframe as everyone else. At least two of my users are experiencing the buffering on their rokus.
However, I had another major issue with the plex server upgrade at the end of June where the server was down for almost an entire week. This thread talks about that issue and it was resolved after a kernel update that came out a week later and upgrading my BIOS (I believe it was the Spectre upgrade in the kernel that messed me up).
Regardless, after completely reinstalling my server and getting it back up and running, the same buffering issue is seen today. I run the server on a gigabit connection and my friend with the roku has a decent connection as well so bandwidth isn’t an issue, especially since they never had an issue before the update.
My other user is marliesheld@shaw.ca, started a movie (Scortched earth) tonight at approx 10pm mountian time, lasted approx 15 minutes & started buffering endlessly. I have 150mb down/up and the user has 175mb down/25up connection.
My Server runs on an Unraid Docker
I have another user that run’s roku as well, but hasnt complained of any issues. I expect that she hasnt completed any updates in some time on her roku.
I’ll try to remember to enable logging and capture a failed stream tonight. My issue is on the local network, so it seems like it would be a good data point since you said all reports have been remote so far.
I will be able to do that tonight. In the meantime I’ll share my server with you so you can play. I’ll share the three libraries that are most often used. WC matches will kick off some heavier transcoding but even on my mobile phone it wasn’t enough to make it buffer.
@kmfurdm thanks! I’ve tried streaming some videos and haven’t had a buffer issue yet. I let one of the video play for 16 minutes without issues. I wonder if this only happens during primetime or can you replicate the issues during the day too?
@ljunkie Watching your stream, you are on direct play. Set it to not allow direct play and the issue should start, usually in the 10-20 minute mark
My users dont have buffering issues with direct play…But their systems dont support the Audio, so i have to have them set to transcoading…
I’ll try it tonight. I should be able to try again tomorrow in the middle of the afternoon. The issue with the remote user has occurred at all times of day.
Did you get a chance to check the logs from the 2 users. Does it show the same bandwidth issues as the others above? marliesheld@shaw.ca &

I have switched Roku’s with mine & replaced the one user with a new one in hops that it was a hardware issue, but still the same… I’m not sure what else to try. When I run speed tests at their house They seem to have more than enough bandwidth…
I did update the server software today to the latest plexpass version, neither has tried a video after the update…not sure if that would make a difference!
