Not sure where to ask....

With cloud sync is there a way to limit the file size? Basically I need the files to NOT exceed 5GBs. I know that changing the resolution will make the files smaller but, I would like to know if there is a better way, other than trial and error, to get the highest resolution while not exceeding the limit?

Plex doesn’t allow specifying a target file size but you can manually get close. Take the 5GB and convert it to megabits (Mb) then divide by the length of the movie in seconds. For a 2 hours movie, it would be this.

40,000 Mb / 7,200 s = 5.6 Mbps

Set the quality to the value closest to this without going over (4 Mbps in this example) and there you go.

Ok thanks for the reply. Was hoping for an easier way.

For now it can’t be done, since getting the file to a certain size would require a custom bitrate setting for each file, which is not how Plex works. The Plex clients should have the quality setting the same as what was used so it will direct play. If you change the bitrate per file, the setting want always fit and you’d get transcoding again, which defeats the point of the optimize feature.

You can always do it manually and just have 2 copies of the movie. Most encoding programs have an option to set the output file size.
