Dears
My shield uses an external 500 GB Toshiba Drive. Its mounted to 2 NAS on which the libraries are. Following issues (in comparrission to PC Plex Server that is running fine on the same network):
Shield looses connection every now and then
Shield is not reachable outside the WIFI every now and then
Library Scans and building up of all pics of the library is very slow
Connection is "to slow to stream outside network "/ buffering constantly
Is the conclusion that NVIDEA Shield Pro is not suitable for Plex Servers?
if you have 2 nas, it sounds like you have a very large media library.
the shield is like a phone with a great gpu, it can suffice for smaller libraries, but it only has so much cpu and ram, so at some point resource requirements can exceed the system’s capabilities.
if this describes your scenario, then it sounds like you have exceeded the performances limits that the shield can provide.
you may want to also review this and other shield related support documents @
due note though, there is no one set library size limit, it will all depend on your setup and your performance expectations.
for example, a large external usb3 media drive, may provide better performance than a smaller NAS (no network overhead, less latency, etc)
edit: you don’t mention if your 500g toshiba is SSD or hard drive, but using an SSD for the plex data (not media), can extend/improve the performance (the faster the device can read/write to the plex database and metadata, the snappier plex will feel).
Thx understood, I will plug in an ssd drive - in the moment the toshiba is a standard hard drive. The 2 NAS have 8 GB each. So I will try using beta version as well and keep you posted, Any divice recommendation that can handle my setup?
while I have shield pro/with built in 500g drive, and shield tube, I don’t use the shield as a server, so sorry I do not have any other specific hardware recommendations, other than the larger the SSD, the generally longer it will last (both in how much storage it can hold, and how many writes it can endure).
buy the biggest/most affordable ssd you can afford.
that said, it was simply something to consider, not necessarily a solution to your issues.
Is the Shield connected to the network via WiFi or wired Ethernet?
If you are going to use it as a Plex server it should have a wired gigabit Ethernet connection.
Throughput on a WiFi network will be much less than wired Ethernet and could explain #1, 2, & 4.
I’ve a Shield 2015 Pro. When connected via WiFi, max throughput is ~250 Mbps. When on wired Ethernet, max throughput is ~500 Mbps. A 2011 MacBook Pro connected to the same switch as the Shield hits 1 Gbps. Measured using a iPerf3 server on my NAS and the Analiti iPerf3 client on the Shield.
#3 is just how it is with PMS on a Shield.
Any library action takes longer - creating thumbnails, scanning, optimizing the database, etc.
I’ve run PMS on my Shield in the past, with media on a Synology DS918+. All the library actions - scanning, thumbnail generation, etc took 2x - 4x longer on the Shield compared to running PMS on my DS918+.
Edit: When I ran PMS on the Shield I never experienced #1 or #2 problems in your first post. I did not have remote access enabled, so no direct experience with #4.
Thx!
Shield, NAS are connected via Ethernet. Intention is however to stream content outside my home on other WIFIs. PMS my be better performing with my new ssd (1 TB)
I used to run PMS on Shield Pro but found constant connection issues with my NAS and had to remove the NAS and add again to get it seen again. After many months of issues I stopped using it as server and purchased a NUC. Never had an issue since and is super fast.
